  2. Phoenix

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: France
    Previously played Coachella: 2006, 2010

Phoenix, while relatively more noticeable overseas than here in the States, exploded on both fronts with 2009's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, a record brimming with shimmering guitar lines, irrepressible hooks and awash with brightness. As Saturday night's headliner, the French group will surely preview tracks from their latest effort, Bankrupt, scheduled to drop a few days after the Coachella lights go out.

    The xx

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: London
    Previously played Coachella: 2010

Taking minimalism to the next level with last year’s second LP, Coexist, London indie pop trio the xx manages to communicate volumes in its elegant, subdued and understatedly sensual tones. We hope their dreamy sounds will translate out in the open desert.

  4. The Postal Service

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Los Angeles
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Ahoy, nostalgic, glasses-wearing romantics! After many years of dormancy, the indie-electro project of Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello is making a return to the limelight. Expect a plentiful helping of tracks from the duo's sole album, the dorm-room staple Give Up, which turns the big 1-0 this year, as well as a sprinkling of new material.

  5. Sigur Rós

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Iceland
    Previously played Coachella: 2001, 2006

Icelandic band Sigur Rós maintains a seemingly unpiercable facade beyond its remote native land—blame it on the combo's brainy, loose dreamscapes, as heard on 2012's effort, Valtari, which marries classic Sigur Rós solemnity with the newer, more vibrant sound as heard on its poppier 2008 LP. The group also caused a stir by releasing a music video starring a very naked Shia LaBeouf playing with butterflies. Edgy art scandals aside, Sigur Rós's gorgeous mystery should make for a magical night in the desert.

    New Order

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Salford, England
    Previously played Coachella: 2005

Here's a rare treat: Seminal English postpunk outfit New Order ventures stateside for its first appearance at Coachella since 2005. Sadly, the group will be performing sans original bassist Peter Hook because of intra-band squabbles—but the opportunity to hear classics like "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Temptation" nearly makes us forget such unseemly quarreling.

  7. Hot Chip

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: London, England
    Previously played Coachella: 2007, 2008, 2010

If electronic dance music is the new pop, should indie dance-rockers prepare to share the spotlight? Among the trendy synth-rock acts riding the electronic-music wave to the top is Hot Chip. Not that this British group is new to the scene—after five studio albums and nearly a decade of experience, it wouldn’t be unfair to consider them veterans. But Hot Chip’s new and very solid record, In Our Heads, might just lift the group from underground-darling status to electropop ubiquity. The house-heavy disc refines the fashionably disheveled crew’s reflective, synth-driven experiments, resulting in its most ambitious and gratifying effort yet. At once clever and dance-floor-ready, these tracks are poised to become anthems for even the most skeptical scenester festival kids.

  8. Grizzly Bear

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: New York, NY
    Previously played Coachella: 2007, 2010

Four years after Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood named Grizzly Bear his favorite band, and three years after the group became everyone's favorite band with the release of harmony-laden indie-pop gem Veckatimest, local indie-rock-faves-made-good Grizzly Bear play this festival gig in support of their newish LP, Shields.

  9. Knife Party

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Australia
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Australian electro-house duo Knife Party (named after a song on the Deftones album White Pony) is a side project of Pendulum's Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen. They'll lay down the in-demand, testosterone-fueled big-room dubstep beats during their Saturday sets.

    Benny Benassi

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Reggio Emilia, Italy
    Previously played Coachella: 2007, 2010

Benny Benassi, the Italian DJ-producer who calls his sound “hypnotech” (we call it the kind of thumping, big-room electrohouse that’s exemplified by productions such as “Satisfaction” and “Who’s Your Daddy?”), hits the decks at Coachella for two Saturday sets.

  11. Franz Ferdinand

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Glasgow, Scotland
    Previously played Coachella: 2006, 2009

This Scottish band, formed in Glasgow in 2002, hit it big with their singles "Take Me Out," "No You Girls" and the quirky "Eleanor Put Your Boots On." They've supposedly been working on a new studio album that may or may not come out later this year, so expect to hear brand new songs from the odd rockers.

  12. Two Door Cinema Club

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Bangor, Ireland
    Previously played Coachella: 2011

Northern Irish indie rock band Two Door Cinema Club is Alex Trimble, Kevin Baird and Sam Halliday (along with a touring drummer, often Benjamin Thompson—the band has never had a permanent percussionist). They make effervescent electropop à la Phoenix and will hit the desert to play tracks off their 2012 album, Beacon.

    Moby

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: New York, NY
    Previously played Coachella: 1999

Moby (born Richard Melville Hall) is most well known for his sample-based electronic music, though he's also a great photographer and outspoken vegan and animal rights activist. Hear his best known songs, off 1999's Play and 2002's 18, as well as new tracks and perhaps a factory farm tirade or two.

    Descendents

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Hermosa Beach, CA
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Considered one of the pioneers of modern day punk pop, skate punk and melodic hardcore, the Descendents lose a bit of street cred for playing Coachella. But we have to admit, we're pretty excited to see them, and we're hoping it's a small crowd of old-school punkers in the audience ready to mosh without worrying about their headdresses or furry hoods falling off.

  15. Yeasayer

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: New York, NY
    Previously played Coachella: 2010

Arty local indie faves Yeasayer support their latest, Fragrant World, during Saturday sets at this outdoor bash. Just don't expect a set of anthemic pop songs. Their latest album release skews toward dark, R&B-tinged—and compulsively listenable—material, although we're sure they'll throw in some poppy, sing-along hits like "Ambling Alp."

  16. Violent Femmes

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Milwaukee, WI
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

One of the best things to come out of Milwaukee (which is saying a lot—Milwaukee has great beers), the alt rockers can still rock out 30-plus years later, as evidenced by their appearance at other recent music festivals, such as Lollapalooza. This is their first time at Coachella, and we have a feeling they won't disappoint (how could they?).

  17. Simian Mobile Disco

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: London, England
    Previously played Coachella: 2008

The U.K.’s Simian Mobile Disco, the duo of James Ford and James Anthony Shaw, is known as master of the hook-stuffed, full-throttle indie-electro realm, but SMD is equally adept at serving up slabs of streamlined, serious-minded techno as well. The recent Unpatterns album skewed toward the latter, but we'd be surprised if the boys didn't let a bit of pop majesty slip into their Saturday sets.

  18. Spiritualized

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: London, England
    Previously played Coachella: 1999, 2008

Space rock! Jason Pierce brings his veteran English space-rock outfit, Spiritualized, over from London (not quite the outer reaches of the galaxy, but still) to play from last year's Sweet Heart Sweet Light. They have seven studio albums, but their most popular is probably 1997's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space.

  19. Puscifer

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Los Angeles, CA
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Tool and A Perfect Circle frontman—not to mention winemaker of note—Maynard James Keenan tries his damnedest to present his theatrical solo project, Puscifer, as a jokey lark, but in recent years the outfit has progressed to the point that it deserves to be taken as seriously as any of his other work. Puscifer's latest, Conditions of My Parole, is a dark, exceedingly crafty art-pop statement.

  20. Café Tacvba

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Ciudad Satélite, Mexico
    Previously played Coachella: 2003, 2005, 2008

Café Tacvba is not just the best rock band in Mexico, but one of the most innovative in the entire rock en español scene. The four-piece outfit, from Cuidad Satelite, sometimes includes a fifth member, Alejandro Flores, who's played the violin in almost every Cafe Tacvba concert since 1994.

  21. Portugal. The Man

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Wasilla, AK
    Previously played Coachella: 2010

The grandiose rock of Portugal. The Man—the most important thing ever to emerge from Wasilla, Alaska, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise—fuses soulful vintage psych-pop with hectic modern production. Inked to Atlantic after a long indie stint, the band arrives in the desert to play oldies, plus songs from its 2011 release, In the Mountain in the Cloud.

  22. The Make-Up

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Washington, DC
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

This American post-punk band, formed in D.C. in 1995, is led by ex-Nation of Ulyssses frontman Ian Svenonius. It's a combination of garage rock, soul and self-styled liberation theology, creating a new genre they called "Gospel Yeh Yeh," with some organ thrown in for good measure.

  23. Bat for Lashes

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: London, England
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Career longevity hinges on reinvention, and art school refugee Natasha Khan knows this. As Bat for Lashes, the London songstress was at the top of the dream-pop tide not so long ago, leading a wave of new artists paying belated homage to Kate Bush and Stevie Nicks with shimmering sound washes and wardrobes to match. Bravely forgoing trendy pop machinery, Bat for Lashes shows us she’s still a step ahead of her peers with 2012's The Haunted Man, and hopefully with an impressive live festival show.

  24. Richie Hawtin

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Windsor, Canada
    Previously played Coachella: 1999, 2003, 2007

He loves his concepts, does Richie Hawtin. From the frankly ridiculous "Cube" (just don't ask) to interviewing Skrillex, the minimal techno futurist (and outstanding producer, lest we forget) is clearly an ideas man. But hey, kudos to him for trying to progress techno shows, even if it does take the form of a somewhat ambiguous idea. And you simply can't knock Hawtin's techno track record—it's outstanding. Catch his Saturday sets, for sure.

  25. Major Lazer

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Philadelphia, PA
    Previously played Coachella: 2010

Formerly a wonky dancehall collaboration between M.I.A. and Santigold stewards Switch and Diplo, Major Lazer now finds Diplo in the company of new running mate Jillionaire. A new LP, Free the Universe, dropped last November, and boasts guest spots by Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors, Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, Wyclef, Shaggy and Bruno Mars, to name but a few. No telling who might pop up onstage during their Saturday sets.

  26. Fedde Le Grand

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Utrecht, Netherlands
    Previously played Coachella: 2011, 2012

The Netherlands' Fedde Le Grand, one of the most popular Dutch house DJs and producers (and not just in his home country anymore), will forever be known as the man behind 2006's massive club hit "Put Your Hands Up for Detroit." We can't say for sure, but it seems likely he'll play the crowd pleaser during at least one of his Saturday sets.

  27. Dropkick Murphys

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Boston, MA
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Boston's Dropkick Murphys—the popular hardcore-ish Celtic punk band formed way back in '96—play a besotted blend of lunkheaded but stirring Irish-influenced pub rock. Live, they're a riot (sometimes quite literally). They're constantly on tour and do yearly St. Patrick's Day weekly shows, so they're seasoned vets on the big stage, although we wonder how the 100-plus heat will do them.

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Rising English star Ben Howard brings his dark, jazz-tinged folk to Indio this April. His debut, Every Kingdom—released by Communion, the label founded by Mumford & Sons' Ben Lovett—is rife with nature references, swoonsome acoustic-guitar strums and softly crooned angst.

  29. 2 Chainz

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Atlanta, GA
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Absurdly hot Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz cut his teeth as Tity Boi with Playaz Circle (remember their Lil Wayne–assisted hit, "Duffle Bag Boy" in '07?), before dropping a selection of mixtapes including 2011's excellent T.R.U. REALigion collection. Playing to promote his recently released debut album proper, Based on a T.R.U. The striking, diminutive, vertical-haired Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and dancer—who hails from Kansas City, was mentored by Big Boi and guests on OutKast's Idlewild album—has made quite a splash. Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Don't miss profoundly weird hip-hop dude Danny Brown, a word-drunk lyricist with the technical skills of a Scribble Jam champion (that's a hip hop music fest in Ohio, not a Scrabble typo, though he is good with his words). Get close enough to the stage and you'll see he's quite proudly missing his front tooth.

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Blacksburg, VA
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Wild Nothing is Jack Tatum's deliciously dreamy, '80s-style indie rock band. Their gorgeous sophomore album, Nocturne, came out last August. The band members are a little shy (we dare them to make eye contact onstage, even with each other) but their songs get your feet tapping and will stay stuck in your head for days—or until the next set.

Seattle soulman Allen Stone is a singer's singer—sure he loves to play the guitar, but performing acoustically, he'd rather just give his all to the singing. It's that kind of a voice, and fans of Raphael Saadiq, John Mayer and Stevie Wonder are sure to appreciate it.

    Guards

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: New York, NY
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

You know Guards frontman Richie Follin, even if you’ve never heard of the guy. He’s the singer-songwriter behind the Willowz, a garage-punk act that director Michel Gondry tapped for the soundtracks of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep. Guards, which includes keyboardist Kaylie Church and Willowz drummer Loren Humphrey, has already landed support slots on tours with indie heavyweights like the Joy Formidable and Menomena, all before their debut full-length was even released. The trio has plenty of connections, apparently, and its indie-pop aesthetic is on the nose. That keen sense of culture carries over to the band’s highly stylized songs, which run the gamut from guitar-driven anthems to retro-pop cool.

    Mona

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Nashville, TN
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

This alt-rock band brings together members from Ohio and Kentucky—they now reside in Nashville, where they've made a splash in the music scene. Chosen as "Brand new for 2011" at that year's MTV Music Awards, the band has slowly been creeping into the mainstream, and promises a set of high-energy, poppy rock.

    Savages

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: London, England
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

This all-female post-punk rock group, formed in 2011, hails from London and brings with it their native land's gritty take on punk rock. These ladies offer up intense performances, for lack of a better word, and their Saturday sets are not to be missed, if you're into that sort of thing.

  53. Shovels & Rope

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Charleston, SC
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

South Carolina duo Shovels & Rope, first-timers at Coachella, comprises raspy-voiced singer-guitarist Cary Ann Hearst and drummer Michael Trent—a married couple who sound a little like Bonnie Raitt fronting the White Stripes. If Jack and Meg ever organized a hoedown, it might sound a little like this.

  54. Huoratron

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Finland
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Huoratron is Finnish electronic music producer Aku Rask, creator of a style that sounds kind of like monstrous, somewhat deranged chiptune material. He's remixed for the likes of M.I.A., which bodes well, but we're curious if he has the chops to play a live festival set (in scorching heat, no doubt).

  55. Reignwolf

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Seattle, WA
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Jordan Cook’s maximum overdrive blues explosion as Reignwolf may not be subtle, but his over-the-top embrace of the electric ax and all its possibilities is undoubtedly highly entertaining. He causes a ruckus with blues rock that's really meant for metalheads.

  56. Cassy

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Berlin, DE
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Cassy (from Berlin's beloved Panorama Bar) works her deep-house magic for the dance floor. There are few artists more beloved on the techno scene, and Cassy (who has apparently dropped the "Britton") doesn't disappoint fans, with incredible live shows infused with her ever-soulful vocals.

  57. 3Ball MTY

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

Origin: San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

This Latin house group was formed in San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico, in 2009. They left the country for the first time to tour in 2010, and won a Latin grammy in 2012 for Best New Artist, no doubt due to their popularization of the tribal-guarachero genre. If you haven't heard it, catch their Saturday set.

  58. Kids These Days

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Chicago, IL
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

The young Chicagoans (and we mean young—have you seen these kids? Are they allowed in the beer gardens?) in indie rock outfit Kids These Days roped in no less than Jeff Tweedy to help record their debut, Traphouse Rock, a collision of hip-hop, jazz, soul and rock. And, wouldn't ya know it, the kids are eating it up.

  59. The 2 Bears

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: London, England
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

The 2 Bears aren't really furry beasts—well, okay, maybe they are a little bit fuzzy. But in reality, they're Joe Goddard from Hot Chip and Ministry of Sound radio-show host Raf Daddy (Raphael Rundell to his ma and pa). They produce 2-step, house and hip hop, and often perform in bear suits (good luck in the desert heat).

  60. The Colourist

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: Orange County, CA
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

This local pop band offers up a brand of tune perfect for summer festival-goers—it's a little bored, a little subdued, and too similar to the other bands around to be offensive. Check out their single "Little Games"—with cloying, cliché lyrics like "what did i do so wrong? you lied and led me on / was i your hit and run? / left for dead and now you're gone" to hear the band at their most upbeat.

  61. Vintage Trouble

    Saturdays April 13 and 20

    Origin: London, England
    Previously played Coachella: First-timer

Prepare thyself for the vocal-led soul, funk and R&B sounds from the Saturday players that formed in LA, but are now based in London. It's been self-described as "live-wired, strait shootin," dirty-mouthed, pelvic-pushing juke music. This, combined with their habit of calling fans "troublemakers," has us hoping their set can live up to the self-induced hype.
