Fred Segal Melrose
West Hollywood

One of two Los Angeles locations, the Fred Segal at Melrose and Crescent Heights has been a hotspot since its opening in 1965 (the Santa Monica destination opened later, in 1985). Originally a 400-square-foot outpost for Segal's own brand of high-end denim, the boutique evolved into a compound of individually owned stores each offering their own unique selection of clothing under the Fred Segal umbrella.
Park for free in the back, and don't feel silly if you get lost at first trying to find the main entrance—there isn't one. Each store is self-contained, and any door you walk through is bound to impress. From the hard-to-find beauty items and fragrances at Apothia to the trendy sportswear at Ron Herman, there's no shortage of unique merchandise to sort through. The stores have always been known as being pricey (Segal was selling jeans in the '60s for $19.95 when most were $1.95), but for every $600 pair of YSL pumps, there's a $50 pair of Converse in a color you won't find anyplace else. Keep an eye out for the semi-annual sales that occur in late January and late September, when nearly the entire compound slashes prices to an initial 50% off and then even up to 75% off in later weeks.
If your credit card isn't maxed out by lunch, head to Mauro's Cafe to linger over salads and pastas and watch the parking lot for tinted SUVs chauffeuring a constant stream of celebrity shoppers.
