Time Out says

Though the massive plans surrounding the restoration of the LA River are still a few years off, things are already happening now—and quickly—for the concrete-lined landmark. Enter the first annual LA River Boat Race, a 3/4-mile route through the newly established Elysian Valley River Recreation Zone. Kayakers, canoeists and stand-up paddleboarders will tackle this stretch of the Glendale Narrows—space is limited, so if you want to paddle yourself, sign up now. But if you'd rather spectate than sweat, scope out a spot on the bike path to watch the action.
