San Giovanni a Mare

San Giovanni a Mare review Rate it

So-called because the sea (il mare) used to lap against its walls, this 12th-century building is the only surviving Norman church in Naples. The foundations of the original apse can be viewed at the junction of the nave and the 13th-century transept. The first side altar on the left - with an unusual cambered arch - contains an exhibition of photos, documenting restoration work. If you can't find anyone to let you into the church, ask at Sant'Eligio Maggiore.
