Set 35m (123ft) below street level, these tunnels, aqueducts and chambers date from the dawn of the Greek city of Neapolis in the fourth century BC. Gradually incorporated into Naples' labyrinthine water supply system, they remained in use until the cholera epidemic of 1884. The tunnels stretch for almost 450km (270 miles); the guided tour covers a kilometre, and lasts about 90 minutes.
