Catacombe di San Severo review Rate it
Built in 1573, the church stands on the site of a monastery complex and much earlier church, founded by Naples' first bishop, Severus. When Severus's saintly body was moved to San Giorgio Maggiore in the ninth century, the site lost its importance. On the left side of the nave, steps lead down to a tiny cubicle containing all that is left of the original catacombs. A wall fresco from the late fourth century depicts St Peter and St Paul, alongside the city's own San Gennaro and San Severo.
