Known for its spectacular acoustics, best experienced during organ recitals, St James's boasts a grand total of 21 altars, some fine frescoes and a desiccated human forearm hanging next to the door. The latter belonged to a jewel thief who broke into the church in the 15th century and tried to make off with gems from the statue of the Virgin. The Madonna grabbed the thief by the arm and kept him captive; the limb had to be cut off.
