San Marziale review Rate it

The real joy of this church is its ceiling, with its four luminous paintings (1700-05) by the vivacious colourist Sebastiano Ricci. Two of them depict God the Father with Angels and St Martial in Glory; the other two recount the miraculous story of the wooden statue of the Madonna and Child that resides on the second altar on the left - apparently, it made its own way here by boat from Rimini. The high altar has an equally fantastic Baroque extravaganza: a massive marble group of Christ, the world and some angels looms over the altar while St Jerome and companions crouch awkardly beneath.
