Gold of Africa Museum

Gold of Africa Museum review Rate it

Located in the historic mustard-hued Martin Melck House, this museum boasts the largest assortment of African gold objects in the world. Most notable is the 300-odd piece Barbier Mueller collection of 19th- and 20th-century West African artefacts such as the massive gold pangolin and gravity-defying shell-like earrings worn by the Peul women of Mali. Especially interesting is the room dedicated to the history of gold, featuring detailed timelines covering every conceivable gold-related event ranging from the making of Tutankamun's coffin circa 1300 BC to the introductiono of the Kruger Rand in 1900.
