In the east side of the city, and part of an urban renewal development, City Hall has undergone some recent renovations. The Edwardian building, originally built out of sandstone in 1905, is also home to the famous and acclaimed Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and hosts various concerts by other regulars. The organ, which was specially designed by Norman Beard, has 3,165 pipes and is second to none in the country. The clarity of the acoustics is particularly impressive (and no amplification is used). The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra can be contacted on 021 410 9809 or at www.cpo.org.za.
