There is a reason - no, make that several reasons - why Peploe's is considered to be the best wine bar in town. First, it's a truly sophisticated joint, its rooms, decked out with wood, murals and crisp table linen, are patrolled by smartly kitted-out staff and resonate to the low hum of intelligent conversation and quietly swinging jazz playing somewhere in the background. It is fast the firm favourite for a fun Friday lunch - full of local heroes and business gurus - and has long been popular as a retreat for the city's cultured set to have their casual evening meals. Chef Sebastian Scheer turns out dishes like crêpe risotto with wilted rocket or loin of free-range pork with a pine nut and apricot gratin. The wine list is obviously very good and very long, and is well worth checking out, even if it's just for a glass of wine at the bar.
