  • The barmaid who served us clearly believes she owns the place, and can only be described as obnoxious. We reckoned she's trying to be an actress but can't find any work, due to being completely up herself, which is a shame as it otherwise seemed like a nice place to go with a friendly crowd.

  • With reference to Grandfield. Thank heavens we won't be seeing you in the French House again, with your predilictions for mobile phones and your ageist prejudices. It's a pub that thrives on good conversation. There are plenty of others nearby suitable for vomitarians and bores such as you.

  • Seems past its best ... whenever best was... if your aged with a crusty collar or have to spend half of the evening going outside for a fag... like half the pub ... then this is for you. The pub can't help that it attracts old men.. but it can help the attitude of its staff... how can any bar staff come on so arrogant in 2012... out of date and too stuck up. It reminds me of the shops you go in where the staff look at you as if to say..." you can't afford to come in here ". The bar stools tend to be upended for closing the moment last orders is called... and the staff disappearing "downstairs " to a private club a few doors away... it just not that nice an atmosphere. You can tell by the sign that request you not to speak into your mobile in the pub... instead you can listen to luvvies harping on about the same old nothing... " ... " look a customer... what can they possibly contribute to our superior little hole "... it is not a place for a fun night in my opinion, you have loads to choose from around the corner, where they smile. best avoided.

  • Staff are terrible and miserable! We were a small group having some drinks and chatting on a Saturday afternoon and spent a small fortune on drinks but at two points we were told to 'Shhhhh' Like we were children! The female bar staff clearly that 'shhhh' us were just rude!

  • As an annual visitor from Australia, I found this gem some years ago. It is my favourite pub/wine bar in London. The staff are all friendly and talkative, one of the bonuses is one of the staff, Dwayne from Australia. Always pleasant and happy to recommend a good wine. The list is impressive! A great spot to people watch, some real characters there. It's a bit like a French Brasserie, beer. wine, food, very civilised. It does get crowded, but that's part of the price for being a very good, atmospheric and friendly bar just near Theatreland. I'll be back in June with friends and can't wait to try Polpetto, the restaurant upstairs. Contrary to some other opinions, the staff are casual, but that's what I like as an Aussie, no pretensions here.

  • The bar staff almost immediately took a dislike to us, I suspect because our group did not fit their preferred clientele profile. i.e. pretentious and Caucasian. They were very rude almost from the outset and one female member of staff was particularly set on making us most unwelcome. Although the doorman was stood approximately 2 metres away and paid us no mind, the aforementioned female member of bar staff (who was at least twice the distance away) started shouting at us to "shush" across the noisy bar room in a very aggressive manner. She was particularly picking out my Chinese girlfriend as the source of the entire din in the bar. On two occasions my girlfriend wasn't actually speaking at the time when she was ordered to shush and when she does speak she is softly spoken. A couple who sat near us protested her innocence as they saw she wasn't actually speaking at the time. We were a group of 4 (one Iraqi, one Chinese and 2 English) and we were not making more noise than anyone else and we certainly were not being rowdy, she just didn't like us. People do talk in bars but not this one, not unless you want to be confronted by a growling barmaid and thrown out. A second female member of staff followed us out and started shouting at my girlfriend in an attempt to escalate the situation on the street. The place is staffed by unprofessional, aggressive, vacuous, pretentious, wannabees (with the exception of the doorman who was professional and polite throughout). This is the first bar I have ever been in where the bar staff try to start fights. All style, no substance and certainly not the place to go if talking to friends or having a good time is your thing!
