Mudchute Farm and Park
Cubitt Town Free

One of London’s largest farms, Mudchute Park and Farm covers 32 acres in the Isle of Dogs. The farm itself is surprisingly compact, but full of animals, many out in the fields, plus a petting zoo and duck pond. Unfortunately the café has recently closed, but the main focus of the park is still the thriving, large Equestrian Centre, a riding school for all ages with an all-weather floodlit riding arena, show jumps and cross-country fences across the many acres. However, if this sounds too adventurous, just bring a picnic to have in one of the many green fields, watch the horses trot by and pretend you’re in the countryside.

Being a country bumpkin at heart, sometimes in the midst of the black smoke and skyscrapers of London, I yearn for some fresh air and a touch of nature- if this sounds like you, head to Mudchute Farm and get your farmyard fix!

With the backdrop of the iconic Canary Wharf, Mudchute really epitomises the urban farm. With horses, llamas, alpaccas, donkeys, pigs, sheep and a menagerie of exotic birds and smaller animals, there is plenty to see. The best way to experience the animals is to buy some feed for a very reasonable 50p and go and make some furry friends. If you aren't an animal lover, the beautiful surroundings are ideal for a long walk, one which isn't confined to roads and pavements. And to refuel after your trek? Head to the cafe for a scrummy cake, all at purse friendly prices.

With its free entry and easy accessibility from the City, Mudchute is the perfect day out for the family or for a childless early twenty-something with a love for goats.

The farm is great, but one should know that waiting lists for horse-riding lessons are extremely long and not worth the wait. :(
