Blink and you might miss this unexpected spot, founded by New Zealander Don Hewitson in 1971 and now a lively holdout against the grim pizza joints and the high-street chains that surround it.

Mumm is on display as you head down to the basement, which gets packed with pre-theatre diners munching burgers. The simple menu is paired with a diverse global wine list; names to watch out for might include Peter Barry from South Australia’s Clare Valley or the Grant Burge shiraz from the nearby Miamba valley, contrasted with cellared Bordeaux (from chateaux Kirwan and Citran).

The only real grumble is the glassware: better stemware would do more justice to this attractive list.

Hidden gem - cosy and intimate. A lovely hideaway from hustle and bustle for a good glass of red wine and nibbles after our night in the Hippodrome

I love this place!!! I definitely do not agree with the former review. We (My friends & family) and I have been coming here for years. Whether its for after work drinks with the girls in one of their popular alcoves or a family birthday celebration. The new food menu has been revamped and its moving with the times. The introduction to table service has been welcomed with open arms ..lets face it when you have had a few the last thing you want to do is re order up at the bar!!! Good work to the staff and new management for breathing new life into a classic hot spot.

Used to be up there with the best of them but the new owner of the C&B has disappointed. Table service is welcome in theory but when you finish your food before your wine arrives, it's pointless. Three times I ordered a drink before I got it. In the end, we went to the bar ourselves and got Vash to help us out. Burgers now appear on those dreadful wooden boards you get in gastro pubs. No thanks. And where's the Daily Mail gone from the loos? Lastly, the new computer screens the waitresses use are free for to read, including what to "PUSH" on customers. Tacky, disappointing. Bring back the old C&B!
