The persistent popularity of this buzzy brasserie is due to an uncomplicated but welcome formula: great food of distinctive character, simply but pleasingly presented, sensibly priced and served by well-informed yet unobtrusive staff in appealing surroundings. That the venue doubles as a deli adds to its charm and sense of place (in this case south-west France), even if the tables are closely packed and the wait for food can be long at busy times. In contrast, wine from an interesting and wallet-friendly list is served swiftly, and generous carafes help conversation flow.
Among the deeply savoury dishes are a number of unmissables: duck rillettes served warm in a mini Staub casserole; 'piggy treats', a rich platter of largely own-made charcuterie, ranging from black and white puddings to tender slivers of pig's ear; anything with foie gras (not least the 'Winner burger' in a brioche bun); and the goose-fat fried chips sprinkled with 'crazy salt' (espelette pepper and sea salt). Due respect is paid to the 'vegetal', and refreshing ways with greenery (sparky leaves dressed with lemon confit) temper the overall richness. Desserts plunge you back into hefty Gascon territory of Agen prunes and rich pâtisserie, though a chocolate and armagnac cake proved dark and elegant.
