In 1971, a group of students began meeting every day at a wall outside of their high school to smoke pot. The group, who later became known as the "Waldos" for this very reason, would meet at 4:20pm. The meeting time that acted as a codeword for the group later grew into a phrase synonymous with teenage and general marijuana use, as well as an unofficial national holiday celebrated by many on April 20. If you happen to be one of these people, you'll probably be interested in these upcoming 420 events happening in LA. And if you can't attend, make sure to at least buy an ice cream burrito from Ben & Jerry's.
1. 420 Festival 2015 (Belasco Theater, Saturday April 25). Ok, so it may come five days later, but this fest is well-known as a good time for ravers-turned-stoners. With DJs like Ace Ventura and Donald Glaude, the 420 Festival is ideal for those who like to smoke with glow sticks. This event was recently moved from the High Desert Event Center and is the final event for organizers, Motive Events. Tickets are still available for $35.
2. Mecca's 420 Funhouse (Mecca Natural Medicine in Culver City, Sunday April 19 and Monday April 20). The name says it all. It's a funhouse with crazy carnival acts, a live boa, free dabs and giveaways that include sex oils and yes, various types of weed. If you have to work on Monday, then head up Sunday and check out the craziness starting at 9am (can you say 'wake and bake'?). Entry is free and a $50 donation is asked in order to receive a gift bag.
3. ABRA CA DABS (Private location, Saturday April 18). Want to be surprised? After you purchase your fairly pricey tickets ($50 for general admission and $100 for VIP), they'll email 24 hours prior to the event to let you know the location and details.
4. GRNHouseEffect 420 Smokeout & Concert (Los Globos, Monday April 20). If you're looking for a late night hip hop party on Monday, GRNHouseEffect is where you need to be. Hosted by DJ Carisma from Power 106, the event includes body painting, a festival atmosphere with tons of live musical acts and 420 giveaways all night. Tickets are still on sale starting at $20.
5. Ale Academy X: Salute to IPAs—The Dankest of Beers (Angel City Brewery, Monday April 20). If you're looking to balance out your high with a little alcohol, you can check out one of the most popular breweries in town and get a history lesson on the quintessential California beer, the IPA. The 7-8pm event is $5 and comes with a beer tasting.
6. Bass Lounge 4/20 Edition (Los Globos, Monday April 20). If you're not feeling the Los Globos hip hop vibe or want to save a little cash, this event is in the same spot as GRNHouseEffect but offers jungle & drum n bass music for a presale price of $10. PRO TIP: For cheaper admission, if you're 21+, bring exactly $4.20.
7. The Hot Box Experience (Secret Downtown Location, Monday April 20). Yes, another secret hiding place to get stoned at on 420. This is what we know... first, you must have a legit medical marijuana card to be allowed entry. Second, it'll be in a warehouse with free tacos, electronic music and tons of art. Oh, and a dance floor and couches will accommodate the active and inactive attendees. Tickets are currently available for $15.
