KCRW’s Echo in the Canyon to celebrate SoCal folk rock with Beck, Cat Power, more

An important date is upon us. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Southern California's famous folk-rock scene—as measured from the release date of the Byrds' debut album, Mr. Tambourine Man. Naturally, a celebration is in order, and KCRW has taken it upon themselves to curate Echo in the Canyon, a very special evening of music at the Orpheum on October 12. It's a one-time only deal, and the lineup is pretty spectacular, with contemporary artists covering some of SoCal's most beloved folk rockers: Beck, Fiona Apple, Jakob Dylan, Cat Power, Regina Spektor and Jade (formerly of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros) will perform the music of the Byrds, the Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, the Mamas & the Papas and more.

We can't really imagine a more lovely, LA-appropriate mashup of music, and we have a feeling that with performers like Beck and Spektor on the bill, these covers will be wonderfully weird and unique. We're also curious about, and hopeful for, special guests—perhaps some of the covered bands? Another folk-rock favorite? Fingers crossed. And while we're inclined to wish the concert was taking place in an actual canyon, the Orpheum is a beautiful, historical venue—and it means we get to sit. We love sitting.

Tickets go on sale Friday morning at 10am, and will run from $55 to $99, depending on how close to the action you'd like to be. We have a feeling this one's going to sell out, so grab seats while you can. Or if you can't go, it's also being reported that there will be a tribute folk-rock album coming out in 2016 featuring the same artists.

Want a taste right now? Check out Cat Power and Jakob Dylan's cover of the Turtles' "You Showed Me."
