The best upcoming concerts in L.A.

Nearly 125,000 music lovers make a pilgrimage to the Empire Polo Club during each identical weekend of Coachella, whether bound for campgrounds or shuttling over from golf resorts and midcentury modern homes. Though its bespoke dining experiences and hotel party scene may try to steal headlines, Coachella remains about the relaxed desert air euophoria of a well-curated music festival. Somehow Dookie is three decades old, and even American Idiot—which to elder Green Day fans probably still feels like a recent release—is now 20. The Bay Area-bred rock trio must have seen that single nostalgic tear stream down your cheek, because they’re turned their latest tour, the Saviors Tour, into a full-blown throwback pop-punk fest with support from the Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and L.A.’s own, the Linda Lindas.

Treat your ears to a vibrant concert on a spring or summer night this year, by attending MUSE/IQUE’s annual program. This monthly series of performances, held venues (largely outdoors) across L.A., features a mix of performances inspired by landmark albums and public figures, including tributes to Ed Sullivan, Bob Dylan, Abraham Lincoln, Oklahoma! and more. In order to attend, you’ll need to become a MUSE/IQUE member; you could make a $75 donation for a single event, but if you’re interested in more than just one, it’s cheaper per event to become a full-fludged member.

One of L.A.’s best free live music offerings, Jazz at LACMA has featured legit legends over its three-decade run at the museum. Seating for the program is available in the museum’s plaza on a first-come, first-served basis, though you’re welcome to picnic on the grass, too (you won’t really be able to see the show, but you’ll still hear it). You’ll find the series on Friday evenings in LACMA’s welcome plaza (just behind Urban Light) throughout the summer.

Bowling Green, KY natives Cage the Elephant first found fame (strangely enough) in England, as well as with their showing at SXSW in 2007 and their eponymous debut album released the following year. Their take on classic garage punk is a chaotic listen that draws on psychedelia, ’70s southern rock, glam and contemporary indie: just the thing for a rollicking live show.

Staged along the convention center side of San Diego’s downtown waterfront, the appropriately named Wonderfront includes sets from Kaytranada, JID, Weezer, Dominic Fike, Beck, Mt. Joy, the Roots, Carly Rae Jepsen, T-Pain, Polo & Pan and more. You’ll find Wonderfront from May 10 to 12 at Embarcadero Marina Park North, Seaport Village and Ruocco Park.

See a free salsa concert every second Friday of the summer during this series at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. This year’s lineup includes Rumbankete, Gabrielito y La Verdad, Son Mayor, Son Miron and Club Mambi—all featuring Super DJ Robby.

Cake on the eyeliner, cry it off and then dance away the tears at the return of this 1980s-to-aughts goth, new wave and punk fest with Duran Duran, Interpol, Blondie, Simple Minds, Placebo, Soft Cell, Adam Ant, Gary Numan and more. The one-day-only event features dozens of alt obsessions on the golf course next to the Rose Bowl, where it once again returns.

It’s been nearly a decade since, Divers, onetime “freak-folk” icon Joanna Newsom’s singular opus full of artfully swooping vocals, deft harp skills, world-building lyrics and meticulous, knotty arrangements. Catch her pull from that and the rest of her remarkable catalog at this string of solo shows at the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever. Newsom will play but piano and harp, and she’s even scheduled a matinee specifically for kids.

Months before Billie Eilish performs at the Forum, you can get an early listen of her new album there. Hit Me Hard and Soft releases on May 17, but you’ll be able to hear it a day early during this listening party at the Forum. The free event takes place on May 16, but you’ll need to submit a request by Tuesday, May 7 at 9am (and if you’re chosen, you’ll be notified on Friday, May 10).
