Children's Museum of Southeastern Connecticut


Kids solve scavenger hunt clues as they meander through Seaside Village and the Discovery Room. An indoor sandbox and fishing boat provide respite from the cold, but bundle up and head outside for a climb to the top deck of the tree house; young visitors are rewarded with a view of Long Island Sound. 409 Main St, Niantic, CT (860-691-1111, childrensmuseumsect.org). $7, children under 1 free. East End Children's Museum


Little ones learn how potato chips are made, then burn off the calories in the new "Fun to Be Fit" exhibit. Long Island Children's Museum


Get enveloped in a giant bubble, produce a news broadcast or try African percussion instruments at this Nassau County institution. At the "ToolBox" exhibit, kids ages five and up hone their carpentry skills with hammers, nails and hunks of wood. While you're there Take a ride on the beautifully restored Nunley's Carousel (Museum Row, cradleofaviation.org/nunleys. $2 per ride. Closed Mondays).

Mid-Hudson Children's Museum


Budding young scientists peer at Hudson River fish through a periscope and gaze at constellations in the Starlab Planetarium. Older kids can ham it up in the Disney Radio DJ booth. 72 North Water St, Poughkeepsie, NY (845-471-0589, mhcm.org). $7.50, children under 1 free. Closed Mondays.
While you're there Cross the river on foot along the 212-foot-high Walkway Over the Hudson (enter at 61 Parker Ave, walkway.org). Bring a stroller for little ones—the bridge is 1.3 miles long.

New Jersey Children's Museum
