Head to the Desert Island Comic Zine Party at the Whitney Museum of American Art on Saturday, October 15
Wed Oct 12 2011
Kids who love comic books—or parents who want to instill an interest in their offspring—should head to the Whitney Museum of American Art on Saturday, October 15, for the Desert Island Comic Zine Party. In conjunction with the exhibit, which closes on Sunday, and Desert Island comics, the party features a comic book fair on the museum's lower level. There, kids will be able to meet such notables as the Partyka Collective (Shawn Cheng, Matt Weigle, John Mejias and Sean McCarthy), Estrella Vega, Jen Ton and Chris Patch, who will be handing out free, limited-edition prints they made specifically for the event. Little ones can put them together to create their own unique comic book or purchase additional prints, zines and buttons on-site. Upstairs, families have one last chance to check out the actual exhibit featuring the multitalented artist's work, among them his pioneering comic strips for the Chicago Sunday Tribune. Educators will be running drawing activities in the gallery, with which kids can make their own comics panel inspired by the exhibit. Sat Oct 15 1--4pm. Whitney Museum of American Art, 945 Madison Ave at 75th St (212-570-3600, whitney.org). Free with museum admission. Ages 8 to 14.
