Baby tossing for good luck?
Fri May 2 2008
We’ve all done crazy things in the name of luck and good fortune—forwarding annoying chain mail letters, wishing on eyelashes/flower petals/pennies, throwing salt over our left shoulders. But tossing a baby off the rooftop ? Um, that seems a bit on the extreme side. Devotees at a Muslim shrine in western India's Maharashtra state, however, believe this is a necessary step to insuring a new baby’s good health, fortune and strength.
While the tradition has been around for more than 500 years, a short video clip of infants being tossed down three stories and onto a sheet held taught by people in the town has just gone viral. Check it out on CNN.
Responses to the story range from outraged parents to devoted religious leaders who standby the practice. I, personally, am having some trouble really wrapping my head around this and taking a stance. Do we have the right to interfere with a country’s longstanding traditions? Just how dangerous is this practice? The babies in the clip appear to be okay... So, tell me, what do you think? Is it any of our business?
