Timeout New York Kids

Make the most of your city

Weekend Quick Picks!

Eat your way through Little Italy at the 80th Annual Feast of San Gennaro. A huge collection of food stands–several serving zeppoles, natch–keeps everyone happy, while kids will flip for the cannoli-eating contest. There are also souvenir stands and carnival booths, so you can bring home an Italia soccer jersey and a giant stuffed animal–just what you need in your apartment. Plenty of of live musical entertainment as well as parades and several religious processions keeps parents happy, too. All ages.

Once upon a time, the Lower East Side was famous more for its pickles and knishes than its current sometimes-egregious population. This weekend, the pickles are back for the Seventh Annual NYC International Pickle Day Festival, an entire day devoted to those crunchy green garnishes and snacks we know and love.  A cornucopia of ethnic groups will offer free samples, and though the fest's namesake will of course be served, so will things you wouldn't think of putting in brine–okra or mangoes anyone? All ages.
Sun 16 11am-4:30pm. Orchard St between Grand and Broome Sts (212-966-0190). Subway: F to Delancey St; J, M, Z to Essex St. FREE.

Head to Midtown West this Saturday to catch a glimpse of something you probably never thought you'd see here–A 53-foot, 6,000 gallon aquarium full of more than 100 native game fish from New York. Kids can also try casting at a target or fly fishing. Though the purpose of the tank is to promote National Hunting and Fishing Day, it's also there to inspire you and your kids to get out and take advantage of "the great outdoors,"–even if that means a stroll through Central Park. All ages.
Sat 15 at 10am. West 48th St at Sixth Ave (basspro.com). Subway: B, D, F, V to 47–50th Sts–Rockefeller Center. FREE.
