Puppetry Arts Festival
Set in some of Brooklyn’s coolest playgrounds, this popular community festival celebrates all things puppet! Spin art, games and arts and crafts for $2–4, $5 tote bag decorating and $4 bounce-house access are just a few of the cool activities on offer. There’ll even be a few costumed Star Wars characters in attendance, plus Tuffy Tiger, a bright orange puppet that helps pre-K–through–second-grade students discover the world around them through song and dance. All ages.
On A Wing Festival
Every year, the On A Wing Festival features family events that celebrate all of New York’s winged park residents. Stop by this fest to gawk at bats, birds and butterflies, grab some colored pencils and sketch the stunning Shakespeare Garden, enjoy storytelling and live music and go on a bird-watching tour with park rangers. Little ones will be especially thrilled by master falconer Lorrie Schumacher's "Talons! Live Bird of Prey Experience." All ages.
Mother's Day Weekend at Wave Hill
The scenic Wave Hill gardens, perched high above the Hudson, are the perfect spot to celebrate Mother's Day with your brood. On Saturday, kids and moms can work together to make fragrant lavender pillows and thoughtful notes, then check out botanical fragrances from Thorn & Bloom Perfume and fine jewelery by Kimberlin Brown in the gift shop—don't forget that admission is free until noon! Get up early on Sunday to jump in on a spring birding walk through the gardens and woodlands (ages 10 and older) or drop by in the afternoon for a family nature walk with naturalist Gabriel Willow (ages 6 and up). For a special treat, indulge in a festive brunch at the historic Wave Hill House (seatings at 10:30am and 1:30pm) or pack a picnic to eat on the Conifer Slope. The art project and artisan shopping will be available on Sunday as well. Make brunch reservations before noon on May 4. All ages.
Fleet Week at the Intrepid
Celebrate Fleet week on the flight deck of this retired World War II ship. Start the week off right and view Naval and Coast Guard ships sailing up the Hudson River where they’ll travel past the Intrepid’s Pier 86 before docking. At the ceremony, guests can watch an unfurling of a 100-foot American flag and check out the playing of the Taps and a ceremonial wreath laying. All ages.
