Nice's heritage centre seems to be right at home among the vaulted and frescoed ceilings of its new base, in one of the quai's beautifully restored 19th-century terrasses. The main reason to visit the centre is to take advantage of the impressive programme of guided walks, which last around two hours and cost just €3 per person. The range of topics (and areas of the town) covered by the guides is exceptional, taking in subjects as diverse as Baroque and art deco architecture, and Matisse's Nice, through to meticulous examinations of the city's botanical heritage. Guides are well informed and seem to have the ability to convey their knowledge in an animated and genuinely interesting style. Both the office and the website contain a mass of scholarly information on the city's sights, monuments, famous residents and historical highlights, as well as specialised inventories for sightseers who've seen it all.
