Turn ‘that one time, in band camp’ into something your kids will actually learn from, says Will Chin

Everyone has a fond memory of their school CCA. Whether you were a boy/girl scout or used a trumpet in questionable ways, you can’t deny the fact that those after-school activities actually taught you something. But guess what – there are plenty out-of-school after-school activities or workshops to enrol your kid in. These are a few of them, available throughout the year but with classes this month, too.

Be a flour star

This month, Chef Daniel Boulud’s db Bistro and Oyster Bar is organising an Easter-themed baking workshop – for children aged six and up. Executive pastry chef Benjamin Siwek helms the 90-minute workshop, during which your kids will hone their baking skills and make their own Easter cupcakes. (Or, simply make a giant mess of everything.)

Next class on Apr 2. 11.30am-1pm. $105.

Flirt with nature

This month, Playeum is organising Hideaways – Creating with Nature, a workshop that teaches children from six to 12 how to design and create their very-own wicking garden. On hand to guide your child along during the workshop is Nova Ceceliana Nelson, a Singapore-based Malaysian artist.

Next class on Apr 17. 10.30am-12.30pm. $32.

Tinker with science

For the inquisitive-minded kids aged five and above, Tinkering Sunday at Playeum, encourages your child to fiddle with disposable cameras and turn them into portable microscopes. With artist Isabelle Desjeux in the lead, your child, armed with his or her DIY microscope, can even venture into the bushes to observe creepy-crawlies under the lens – come with an open mind and closed shoes for this one.

Next class on Apr 24. 10.30am-12.30pm. $32.

For little speed demons

Held at the Centaurs Sports Park along Turf Club Road, Sports Camps Australia’s (SCA) Mountain Biking Camp focuses on better riding techniques, and overcoming rugged terrains and obstacles – caters to kids from ten all the way to 18. Leading the camp is Australian mountain biking pro, Michael Brown, who will literally steer your kids off the beaten track and straight through the challenging jungle trail – and what a trail it is.

Next class on Apr 3. 9am-3pm. $135.
