Following a sold-out season at The London Coliseum last year, large-scale theatre production The Mongol Khan will make its Asia premiere in Singapore at the Sands Theatre from October 17, 2024.

Originally written by renowned Mongolian writer and poet Lkhagvasuren Bavuu in 1998, The Mongol Khan was revived in April 2022 by the Mongolian State Academic Theatre of Drama.

The play draws inspiration from various historical events, archaeological findings, traditional nomadic dances, and the music of the ancient Hun culture of Central Asia during the Hunnic Empire. It promises to be a huge spectacle, featuring 70 actors, dancers and musicians, accompanied with top-notch sets and costumes, original music, storyline, choreography and puppetry. What sets this production apart is its ability to offer both entertainment and historical insight. The Mongol Khan delves into the evolution of Mongolian culture, weaving a narrative around a brutal succession that threatens the empire. This tragic tale unfolds with themes of jealousy, mistaken identity, adultery, rivalry, sacrifice, and power struggles, evoking a range of emotions.

The Mongol Khan is a powerful story with a unique blend of entertainment and historical insight, and we are confident that it will not only captivate and inspire audiences in Singapore, but also further strengthen cultural connections between the nations,” says Chief Executive Officer of Base Entertainment Asia, Chantal Prudhomme.

Behind the production is an international team of world-renowned artists and creatives including Tony-nominated playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker (Our Country’s Good, Three Birds Alighting On A Field), Olivier and Tony Award-winning Nick Barnes (Life of Pi, The Lorax), and the prolific historian and travel writer John Man, an expert in Mongolian history and culture. The play is also produced by Bayra Bela, known for their work on Amazon’s The Power and Netflix’s Marco Polo, and directed by venerated Mongolian director Hero Baatar.
