Diversification is the key to success at this inventive city pub
Who’d have thought such an inoffensive-looking stone pub near Adelaide’s law courts could be so…well, subversive? They’ve cheekily cordoned-off a slice of footpath out the front for seating (love the designer carpentry benches), while inside the good King’s constituents chew burgers and sip craft beers over extended happy hours (5pm to 9pm Fridays). It’s dark in here – almost grungy – with black-painted walls, rock posters, skull paintings, a beaten-up DJ console and booth seats. All very broody and noir. But the real clincher is the split-business arrangement with Sturt Street Cellars in one corner of the pub – a savvy walk-through wine bar where you can quaff an after-work glass or brown-bag a bottle to go.
