While Barbara Stanwyck had appeared in a few westerns during the '30s, she did not truly become identified with the western until the '50s, when her steely toughness and grace in the saddle gave her a new lease on popularity in films like CATTLE QUEEN OF MONTANA, THE FURIES and THE MAVERICK QUEEN. In Samuel Fuller's terse, cynical and nearly avant-garde western FORTY GUNS she plays a corrupt cattle baroness with an army of forty tough gunfighters and her eye on number forty one. Essentially a film noir on horseback with unforgettable tough dialogue courtesy of the peerless Fuller.
