D.HENRIE VERNEUIL, France, 1971, DCP, 120min.

Jean-Paul Belmondo is a master thief and Omar Sharif is a crooked detective who wants a cut of his take and will go as necessary to get it in Henri Vernieul’s fast-paced, action packed cat-and-mouse film set in Greece. This is a first-class action suspense film with music by Ennio Morricone, cinematography by Claude Renoir and car chase stunts by Remy Julienne. The film belongs to Belmondo and Sharif though. Belmondo’s crooked charisma and jaw-dropping athleticism would be enough to carry most any film but Sharif, playing a terrifyingly competent bad cop, brings his balancing force to bear and the duel between the two is thrilling. Also stars Dyan Cannon and Robert Hossein. Based on a novel by pulp master David Goodis.

Part of the series:

In association with Drafthouse Films, AFS presents a series of some of the best French crime films of the '70s. This was the era of Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon, of souped up Citroens and quayside holdups in Marseilles. We are proud to present films from Jean-Pierre Melville (of course) and also his talented peers Claude Sautet and Henri Verneuil.

This series is presented in conjunction with Drafthouse Films to celebrate the release of THE CONNECTION.
