Music News Nashville, dubbed him a “guitar-slinging poet.”
No Depression described his voice, “like a ’57 Chevy with glass mufflers…”
Routes & Branches deemed his songs, “smart, strong lyrics that mean something, and say it in a way you haven’t heard before.”
Of himself he says, “I’m a vegetarian that watches NASCAR, a tree-hugger that keeps a gun under the seat.”
Known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes as well as Roger Miller type humor and heart gigging ballads, Grant Peeples is a 7th generation Floridian and former expatriate. He spent over a decade living on a small island off the Miskito Coast of Nicaragua. During his absence (1995-2006), while our country was surging ahead into lifestyle changes bordering on futuristic, Grant was installing the island’s first flushing toilet, digging his own well, and rescuing sea turtles on Little Corn Island. He returned in 2006 to a homeland going through economic, social, and political upheaval. Much of his writing is a response to what he found on his return.
Grant’s latest release, Punishing the Myth, debuted at #1 on the Freeform American Roots chart.
It is the third of a trilogy of records produced by legendary roots icon Gurf Morlix. John Conquest of 3rd Coast Music has named him songwriter of the year multiple times. Of his writing, Conquest says, “Unusually literate, unusually honest…Grant Peeples is the only songwriter I’ve ever called ruthless…”
Peeples is a 2014 recipient of the Chengzhong Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which carried with it a $10,000 developmental grant. The Foundation cited the “humor, compassion, and wisdom” of his songs, as well as “unflinching social insight and cultural acuity.”
His mother finds his songs…disturbing…
