Free and Open to the Public

The League of Women Voters of the Austin Area is sponsoring a discussion, open to the public, about economic extremes in Austin. Speakers include authors of the book Invisible in Austin, edited by the UT sociologist, Javier Auyero. The speakers will discuss the lives of those who provide many essential city services yet work at the bottom of the social order: housekeepers, cab drivers, restaurant workers, musicians, roofers and others, focussing on their struggles with substandard housing, inadequate public services and schools, and environmental risks.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Dan Zehr from the Austin American-Statesman who wrote a series on inequality last year. They will suggest possible "ladders of opportunity" that could enable these hardworking individuals to become more economically and socially stable.
