Project Birthday Blessings says
At any given time, there are about 2,000 people who are homeless in Austin, Texas (ECHO 1/15). This year, instead of giving me birthday gifts, I'm asking all of my friends and family to help me make "blessing bags" that I can give to people in need. I intend to give some to Nubian Queen Lola (a local restaurateur who helps feed Austin's homeless) so she can distribute them at her restaurant on Sundays, and I'll keep the rest in my car to distribute throughout the city.

I'll collect items from May 19 - June 19. Here's what we need:

feminine hygiene products
calling cards
mini toiletries
bus passes
yoga mats
water bottles
non-perishable snacks
hand sanitizer
hand towels
tote bags
rain ponchos

In recent years, I've had the opportunity to travel all over the USA, and in no other city have I paid as close attention to our homeless brothers and sisters. One month I could miss the rent or have a medical emergency, and easily join their ranks. Since I can't provide them housing, please help me begin to meet their basic needs. As an AmeriCorps VISTA, I get paid LESS than minimum wage, so I can't afford to make these blessing bags on my own. I'd really appreciate your help. Austin kin, I can pick up any items that you're willing to donate. Friends and family elsewhere, I can provide my mailing address for the items you want to contribute.
