Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz Teatro Workshop says
Join the ESB-MACC Education Department in their first-ever Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Interactive Theater workshop facilitated by experienced Latino performance instructors.
This workshop will examine the work of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz through the use of interactive theater and poetry writing. Sor Juana’s work emerged during the Mexican colonial period, during a time of extreme racial and gender hierarchy. Her poetry, prose and plays touched on controversial subjects such as a woman’s right to education and religious indoctrination, and included strong-willed and clever female characters. Using the theoretical framework of Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed, participants will be able to explore Sor Juana’s story, as well as bring to focus the relevancy of her words today. Sor Juana’s poetry reflected her roots, education, and struggles as a woman in New Spain. Another component of la coyuntura includes a poetry writing component where participants will be able to compose their own piece that draws from their own experiences.
