Takeshi Murata (American, b. 1974) is a filmmaker and visual artist working in digital animation. Murata’s approach to filmmaking embraces new computer software, and frequently innovates uses for existing technologies. Murata’s past projects have incorporated intricate hand-drawn animations, computer-generated imagery, digital scans of three-dimensional objects and intentionally corrupted video. Through each project and technique, Murata has developed a uniquely surreal aesthetic combining digital textures and dark humor. Murata has exhibited internationally in museums and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Smithsonian Museum of American Art; and the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

A seminar with the artist for current department students will follow the lecture in the Art Building, Room 3.206.
