Are we looking at the beginning of the Johnny Depp comeback? After all these years of dead-behind-the-eyes performances, is it back to the glory years of playing outsiders, loners and misfits? We only ask because the trailer for mob drama ‘Black Mass’ is pretty impressive. Based on real events, the film is a biopic of gangster Whitey Bulger, a bigwig on Boston’s organised crime scene from the 1970s to the 1990s (he’s now serving two consecutive life sentences in prison). Depp totally transformed for the role – with blue contact lenses and a god-awful comb-over. He’s menacing as hell in the trailer, intimidating a guy over dinner Joe Pesci-style. And it’s worth bearing in mind that director Scott Cooper coaxed an Oscar-winning performance from Jeff Bridges in 2009’s ‘Crazy Heart’.
