A powerful one-woman show which bravely denounces abuse in ethnic minority communities, 'Holy and Horny' explores one woman's attempt to remain holy while also being horny.
Written and entirely performed by the hugely-talented Tonya Joy Bolton, (she acts more than 20 characters and it's easy to forget that it’s just her on stage), the play unfolds against the background of a bigoted Black Church (Tonya is of Caribbean descent).
In response to this extreme puritanism, it explores ‘how to reconcile our sexual longings with our religious beliefs’; ‘the role of women in the 21st Century’; and ‘the vital importance of self-reliance’ – this last topic is an important one as many youngsters (and adults) feel insecure in a complex, often unpredictable, society. Despite the many hilarious moments, the play is also tragic as it denounces the murky depths lying beneath the loving religious community.
This is the 'Farewell Tour' of her long-running performance, with stops both in the US and UK.
