This urban oasis is one of the world's largest inner city parks and also has some of the best views in Perth. Within it you'll find the Fraser Avenue Precinct (a century-old walk lined with red-flowering gums), more than 250 hectares of protected bushland, the State War Memorial, beautiful outdoor events spaces and playgrounds galore.
The park's Indigenous history can be explored through heritage tours that showcase bush food and medicine, the Aboriginal Art Gallery, the stone Beedawong Amphitheatre and the Boodja Gnarning Walk. For thousands of years Aboriginal people have been visiting the highest point of the park – known as Mooro Katta or Kaarta Gar-up – while the area below (Goonininup) was an important place for ceremonies, traditional stories and community gatherings.
That sense of community and gathering continues within the park, with picnic tables and free electric barbecues dotted throughout. You can also hire many areas of the park, including gazebos, the Saw Avenue Amphitheatre, pavilions and lawn spaces.
Free guided daily walks will guide you through the Botanic Garden, where you'll find more than 3,000 species of flora unique to Western Australia. The park's biodiversity is supported by strong research and conservation efforts, which includes initiatives like species recovery, woodlands restoration and an on-ground science team.
Kids and families will love the playgrounds and adventure spaces. Clamber up the spiralling DNA tower for amazing views, climb in dinosaur footprints at Synergy Parkland or relax at the Saw Avenue Picnic Area. Cyclists are welcome to enjoy the park on main roads and shared use paths.
You can bring also pack your own picnic or you'll find several cafés throughout the parklands, including the Zamia Café, Fraser's Restaurant, Stickybeaks Playground Café, Kings Park Kiosk, Botanical Café and the Bovell Kiosk.
Throughout September, the Kings Park Festival presents a huge display of Western Australian Wildflowers along with wellness events and talks.
