Situated in the heart of central Cape Town's art-and-antiques precinct, the Pan African Market is uniquely attractive for a number of reasons. The lobby is a gem of Victorian tiling, while the first and second floors are a beehive of traders in new and old folk art, with representatives from most locales in West, sub-Saharan and southern Africa. Once you've ordered your custom-tailored garment, and finally chosen your mask among the many thousands, enjoy a coffee or a Swahili-infused lunch on the oh-so-quaint first-floor terrace. Bargaining is welcomed.

took a friend from australia to the pan-african market today. beside the usual tourist curios (which are much cheaper than on greenmarket square) there is an incredible range of ART from all over africa as well as excellent quality south african crafts. the sales people are not pushy and willing to strike a deal. should be a mandatory stop for all visitors who want to shop for african arts and crafts.

Dear Graham,
Thank you for the posting on The Pan African Market below. We, as the management of the enterprise wish to officially place on record the inaccuracy of it. There is neither a Nigerian trader in the management records nor an ivory product on the records of the store owners during the stated period and in fact for the whole of the year 2010. We do suggest that the enquirer do a wider search for the source of her purchases and that she visits us when next in Cape Town (or on line at for a more gratifying shopping experience.

Lots of attractive non ivory items on sale here. Take time to browse and don't feel obliged to buy unless you really like something. You will be supporting genuine African artists and crafts people from many different African countries. You can also check out things on their new website

Serves you right, you shouldn't be supporting the ILLEGAL trade of ivory any way!

A Nigerian shopowner in the Pan African Market sold me an elephant made of ebony but he cleverly did not put the ivory tusks in with thepackage that I paid for, so when I arrived home it was with only the elephant. Any idea if I can track him down? He had the tusks in a separate bag. Shady!
