The best wagyu burgers in Cape Town

The best wagyu burgers in Cape Town

Here at Time Out Cape Town, we sure do love a burger. It’s why our expert guide to the Best burgers in Cape Town is at 25 of the city’s best burger joints… and counting! But what’s better than a burger? A Wagyu burger! All the things we love about a great patty are dialled up to 11 when you use Wagyu mince.   What is Wagyu? Wagyu refers to a group of Japanese-origin cattle breeds (Kobe is the poster child) prized for their intense fat marbling. As the meat cooks, the fat melts, basting it from the inside out. It’s heaven in a steak, but in burger form, that means more flavour, more tenderness and more crispy caramelisation on the edges. But using Wagyu isn’t a free pass to going OTT. It’s about balance and technique. The best spots choose the right grind and fat ratio, season just right, and bring toppings that turn up the volume further. Bring me the piquant pickles, proper cheese and a bun that has the chops to hold it all together, and we can talk. Sound good? We think so, which is why we’ve done the hard yards to eat our way across the city to bring you the Cape Town kitchens doing Wagyu burgers the right way. Bring an appetite. Grab extra napkins. This one’s going to be delicious. The 19 best breakfast and brunch spots in Cape Town

The 19 best breakfast and brunch spots in Cape Town

As much as Cape Town is a hotspot for nightlife, it’s also a city that knows how to make mornings count. Step out in the city on a Saturday and you’ll see pelotons of cyclists powering south down the peninsula. Surfers strap boards to the roof in search of the best surf breaks in Cape Town, Park Run events are packed, and runners pound the pavement on the Sea Point Prom or tackle the endless trails of Table Mountain. All of which means that by the time the sun is up, half the city has earned their breakfast. And those sleeping in after the night before? Well, they deserve a good feed. Happily, Cape Town has no shortage of sublime spots for breakfast and brunch, whether you’re in the city or the suburbs. The city’s coffee culture is as complex as the artisan hand-roasted beans being ground by bearded baristas, and bakeries turn out pastries so good they’ll make a Parisian weep. And the melting pot of the city’s kitchens comes to the fore here too, whether it’s shakshuka from the Levant or a southern-style chicken waffle. Brunch might come with bubbles (local Cap Classique, of course) and plant-leaning cafés (Cape Town’s vegetarian restaurants are sublime) pile bowls with greens and grains. All of which means you’re spoilt for choice when deciding where to go for breakfast or brunch in Cape Town. Take a seat, and check out these local favourites. The world’s 20 best cities for food right now

The world’s 20 best cities for food right now

In January, we published our annual ranking of the world’s best cities. To create the list, we quizzed city-dwellers on everything from happiness and nightlife to walkability – and while all these factors are important in making a city great, let’s face it: a city is nothing without its food. From street eats to fine dining, family-run taverns to cutting-edge kitchens, eating and drinking is the backbone of local culture in our cities and the reason many of us choose to travel.  So, in order to figure out the great culinary metropolises of today, we surveyed thousands of people around the world about food in their city. We asked locals to rate their city’s food scene across 18 different criteria, including quality, affordability and attributes from ‘family-friendly’ to ‘experimental’.  Each city was ranked according to quality and affordability ratings, alongside a score from a panel of Time Out food experts – editors, food critics and Time Out Market chefs – who were asked to share their insights into the most exciting cities for food right now. To create the final ranking, we included only the highest-scoring city for each country to ensure the list reflects culinary cities globally. We then asked our global network of food writers to tell us exactly what makes their city such an exciting place to eat right now. The result? A very tasty list indeed. In each of these 20 cities, you’ll find the best of the old-school and the new. There are long-standing street food stalls and

The 50 best cities in the world in 2025

People who don’t live in cities will tell you they’re busy, lonely and expensive places. But there’s a reason so many people choose to live in them: with world-class art and culture, unbeatable food and nightlife, buzzing neighbourhoods and a dizzying amount of stuff to do and see, there’s simply no better place to be.  Every year, we take the pulse of city living by quizzing thousands of locals across the planet about life in their hometowns. This year, more than 18,500 city-dwellers shared their insights on everything from food, nightlife and culture to affordability, happiness and the overall city vibe. When urban living can sometimes feel isolating and costly, this year we wanted to get a sense of what, exactly, makes a city feel like home. Sure, the nightlife is great, but is the city safe and walkable? Is good quality food and art available at a reasonable price? Is it easy to make friends, find love, and access nature?  Livability was a key factor in our ranking this year. But a great city to live in is, naturally, a great city to visit. So, along with the thousands of responses from locals around the world, we asked Time Out’s global network of city experts to vote on the places they think are particularly exciting right now. After crunching all that data, here we are: Time Out’s definitive ranking of the world’s best cities in 2025. The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

4 out of 5 stars
I've lived the majority of my life in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, so I am a little annoyed that it took me nearly four decades to visit this wonderful hotel, located pretty much on my doorstep in Constantia. If you love comfort, historical significance, great service, and delicious food, then The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel is that spot. Throw into the mix a stunning nine acres of gardens to explore and a whole host of activities to partake in - both at the hotel and in the surrounding area, and you have an adventure awaiting you which is sure to satisfy your need to relax and be pampered. I know that is how I felt when I sadly had to check out... Why stay at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel? I'm not going to go into a full history lesson on the hotel and its property; just know that its roots date all the way back to 1693 and it's definitely a big plus as to why you should book your stay. I'd also highly recommend asking a member of staff to take you around the property, as the nuggets of information will make your stay all the more richer - as it did for me. Over and above that, there is a warmth to the hotel. It feels like you are at home. I know that sometimes sounds a bit cheesy, but it's true. From the lovely staff to the homely feel of the rooms - not to mention its prime location - it is well worth checking out. What are the rooms like at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel? The hotel is home to 51 guest rooms, suites, and villas. I was afforded the opportunity to stay in one of t

Chunk of Muizenberg beach closed off to public until December

The construction work taking place in Muizenberg has led to the closure of a large chunk of Surfer's Corner. From Saturday, 4 October 2025, the end of the beach nearest the railway line will be inaccessible to the public as the construction team "starts installing the dewatering system for the excavation works on the promenade stepped revetment," Ward 64 Councillor Izabel Sherry explains. This portion of the beach is expected to be reopened by December 2025. Those who love to catch waves in that area can still do so, with Sherry confirming that surfers "will still have access to the waves in the corner, but you’ll need to enter and exit the water from the remaining beach area that is not closed". WhatsApp Announcement / Ward 64 Councillor Izabel Sherry What's actually going on in Muizenberg? The City of Cape Town announced last year an ambitious redevelopment project for Muizenberg’s iconic beachfront.  The rebuild of the extensive public areas began in mid-February 2025, with the refurbishment, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, set to upgrade public amenities, improve parking, and replace deteriorating sea walls.  The redevelopment started in Surfer’s Corner, close to the railway line, with a rebuild of ageing coastal infrastructure, including wooden seawalls, stone masonry steps, and curved concrete structures. These will be replaced with a stepped revetment, or retaining wall, featuring a three-meter-wide promenade and a universally accessible beach ramp. Des

Cape Town Taste Test: Heirloom's fresh Summer menu

Summer is nearly here, folks! What that means for the restaurant industry is that a flurry of Summer menus are being launched in time for the change of season - and the general mood around the city as people come out of hibernation. The latest Summer menu launch took place at the Cape Grace's Heirloom restaurant on Thursday night, with Executive Chef Wesli Charls Jacobs bringing South African heritage to the fore with his latest offering. The overall feel of the new menu is one of freshness, with the array of dishes clearly prepared with the impending Summer heat in mind. The attention to detail is something diners have come to expect from Chef Wesli, but one of the starters in particular - the Abalobi Sashimi, caught my attention and then some. Just look at it below... Time Out Cape Town - Abalobi Sashimi Candied chilli, an avocado emulsion, lemon zest, grapefruit, and tiger's milk combined superbly with the sashimi, which quite literally melted in my mouth. That theme of freshness was most definitely highlighted here. Rivalling the sashimi for my favourite dish from the starters offering was the Buffelshoek Venison Carpaccio. The venison of choice for this dish is springbok, with biltong dust, various textures of mushrooms, a cleverly placed vetkoek and wholegrain mustard ice cream (yes, wholegrain mustard ice cream!) all working seamlessly together to create a flavour bomb of pretty epic proportions. Delicious! Time Out Cape Town - Buffelshoek Venison Carpaccio Moving

This is what R36.99 got you at KFC back in 1995

Five pieces of KFC chicken. Two mash and gravy. Two coleslaws. Two portions of chips. Two double chicken burgers. Four rolls. That's what the Monster Family Meal from KFC consisted of back in 1995. The cost? A mere R36.99. Yes, I know how inflation works and how the cost of living has shot up over the years, but to think all of this food was attainable for just R36.99 three decades ago is crazy and a little scary. Check out the advert that's been floating around social media below: Scanning through the KFC menu of 2025, to build a meal like the above using the closest available options to what was available back then, you'd need to fork out R444.70. If you took that same R36.99 with you into the popular fast food chain today, you couldn't even get a Streetwise Two! Meet Callisto, Cape Town's one-eyed caracal

Meet Callisto, Cape Town's one-eyed caracal

Following the frenzy caused by Gordy the Seal in May, a new wild animal in Cape Town has stolen our hearts - and she's the beautiful Callisto the Caracal. What makes Callisto so fascinating is the fact that she only has one operational eye. For many wild animals, an impairment such as the loss of vision could lead to difficulties surviving in their natural habitat; but not our Callisto - she is thriving! Callisto was first spotted in the Cape Point Nature Reserve in 2023. While her exact age is unknown, it is believed that she is five or six years old, as she was already an adult at the time of the first sighting. Speaking to Time Out Cape Town, Dr Gabriella Leighton, the Coordinator of the Urban Caracal Project, believes that the loss of sight in her left eye is the result of "a glaucoma from an old injury". Dr Leighton explains: "Losing sight in one eye would be challenging for a predator that relies on vision to hunt. Despite her visual impairment, Callisto has been able to successfully move around her territory, take down prey, find mates, and raise multiple kittens." Hearing that she has been able to raise kittens makes Callisto's story even more incredible. "Caracals are remarkably resilient and adaptable animals, but Callisto is especially so! She is also a great mother and it's great to see her bringing up kittens over the years. We have documented her with at least two kittens: one in 2023 and one this year. Kittens were spotted later in the year, around July/August

Those priceless moments where Jozi’s spirit has come alive and thrives, it's all thanks to you. 'Siyakhe Sonke' is our thank-you and our promise to keep building together for the next decade,” Linden Market director Stachia Conradie says. The Two Oceans Marathon is back on for 2026

The Two Oceans Marathon is back on for 2026

Good news, Cape Town runners, the Two Oceans Marathon (TOM) will indeed take place in 2026 following a period of uncertainty. Controversy arose after too many runners took part in the 2025 race. The City of Cape Town issued two permits - one for the Half (17,000) and one for the Ultra (14,000) Marathons. However, 20,600 entered the Half Marathon and 17,677 officially crossed the finish line, according to News24. This led to the City reconsidering their issuing of future permits, as the greater numbers 'compromised participant safety and undermined the extensive planning required for large-scale events'. Thankfully, it appears all of those issues have been ironed out and the 'World's Most Beautiful Race' will be run on 11 and 12 April 2026, with race officials making the exciting announcement on Monday afternoon. There will be a new partner, to boot... or is that 'to running shoe'? Anyway... Two Oceans Marathon / Facebook On the new partnership, Chris Goldschmidt, Chairman of the Board of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC, says: “The Two Oceans Marathon has a proud history, and this partnership marks a significant step forward in ensuring its future as a world-class event. We are confident that with Stillwater Sports’ proven expertise, alongside the continued support of Totalsports, the 2026 edition will set new benchmarks for excellence and inclusivity.” It has not been confirmed which day of the weekend will host the Half Marathon and which day will host the Ultra Marathon, so

Cape Town narrowly misses out on top spot for hiking

From the Pipe Track to Lion's Head and Skeleton Gorge, we are truly spoiled for choice in Cape Town when it comes to hiking adventures, with hikers of all levels being afforded the chance to get out there and have some fun. Time Out Travel reports that 'the number of nearby hikes in each city, alongside the number of reviews and the average rating the hikes were given' were key in determining a winner. Upon completion of the study, it was found that Brazil's Rio de Janeiro is the best city globally for hiking, while our beloved Mother City came in third, tied with San Francisco in the United States. Salsify and FYN both claim spots on prestigious list

So here's a bit of a brainteaser which may require you to reach for a Panado or two... Salsify at the Roundhouse has just been named in 88th spot and FYN in 82nd place on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Top 100 list. The question you may be pondering now is, how do you make the 82nd and 88th spots on a top 50 list? Well, you see, this particular list highlights the 50 best restaurants globally as their flagship list, but then they also have a secondary extended list of the next best in the world - it's kind of a preview to the restaurants who are likely to have a go at cracking the top 50 one day. I told you that Panado would come in handy. Photograph: Salsify at The Roundhouse The news broke on Thursday and to say that Salsify head chef Nina du Toit is happy would be an understatement. “I am so proud of what we have accomplished, it has been a dream to be on the list, and it has been many years of consistent growth and hard work,” says Nina. Since opening its doors in 2018, Salsify has become known and celebrated for its insistence on the preservation of heritage; paying tribute to history, stories and ingredients while creating outstanding light, delicate dishes. FYN's Peter Tempelhoff shares the delight felt by du Toit, saying: “To be recognised by the World’s 50 Best for the fifth time is an extraordinary honour. This is a celebration of the whole team - from our kitchen and service brigades to our foragers, farmers, fishermen and ceramicists. FYN is the product of a de
