The 28 best breakfast and brunch spots in Cape Town

The 28 best breakfast and brunch spots in Cape Town

As much as Cape Town is a hotspot for nightlife, it’s also a city that knows how to make mornings count. Step out in the city on a Saturday and you’ll see pelotons of cyclists powering south down the peninsula. Surfers strap boards to the roof in search of the best surf breaks in Cape Town, Park Run events are packed, and runners pound the pavement on the Sea Point Prom or tackle the endless trails of Table Mountain. All of which means that by the time the sun is up, half the city has earned their breakfast. And those sleeping in after the night before? Well, they deserve a good feed. Happily, Cape Town has no shortage of sublime spots for breakfast and brunch, whether you’re in the city or the suburbs. The city’s coffee culture is as complex as the artisan hand-roasted beans being ground by bearded baristas, and bakeries turn out pastries so good they’ll make a Parisian weep. And the melting pot of the city’s kitchens comes to the fore here too, whether it’s shakshuka from the Levant or a southern-style chicken waffle. Brunch might come with bubbles (local Cap Classique, of course) and plant-leaning cafés (Cape Town’s vegetarian restaurants are sublime) pile bowls with greens and grains. All of which means you’re spoilt for choice when deciding where to go for breakfast or brunch in Cape Town. Take a seat, and check out these local favourites. The 50 best cities in the world in 2025

The 50 best cities in the world in 2025

This list is from 2025. Our latest ranking for 2026 is live here. People who don’t live in cities will tell you they’re busy, lonely and expensive places. But there’s a reason so many people choose to live in them: with world-class art and culture, unbeatable food and nightlife, buzzing neighbourhoods and a dizzying amount of stuff to do and see, there’s simply no better place to be.  Every year, we take the pulse of city living by quizzing thousands of locals across the planet about life in their hometowns. This year, more than 18,500 city-dwellers shared their insights on everything from food, nightlife and culture to affordability, happiness and the overall city vibe. When urban living can sometimes feel isolating and costly, this year we wanted to get a sense of what, exactly, makes a city feel like home. Sure, the nightlife is great, but is the city safe and walkable? Is good quality food and art available at a reasonable price? Is it easy to make friends, find love, and access nature?  Livability was a key factor in our ranking this year. But a great city to live in is, naturally, a great city to visit. So, along with the thousands of responses from locals around the world, we asked Time Out’s global network of city experts to vote on the places they think are particularly exciting right now. After crunching all that data, here we are: Time Out’s definitive ranking of the world’s best cities in 2025. Read on to see how your hometown fared… RECOMMENDED:🛍️ The coolest n

Fun Facts about the Kruger National Park

Fun Facts about the Kruger National Park

As someone fortunate enough to have visited the Kruger National Park many times since childhood, I may be biased in saying this. Still, there are few other places around the world that come close to the pure relaxation and tranquillity this natural wonderland has to offer. From the flowing waters of the many rivers to the changing landscapes which bring about so much natural beauty, the Kruger is that one place where you can take a step back from the troubles of life and simply let go. To celebrate all the wild and wonderful aspects of the Kruger, below are some facts about the world-famous game reserve that will only fuel your desire to pack your bags and head off on the trip of a lifetime. The best road trip pitstops in South Africa

The best road trip pitstops in South Africa

"It's not about the destination, but the journey..." Or something like that. Try telling that to screaming kids who, for the 303rd time in an hour, believe asking, "Are we there yet?" is going to make the car instantly teleport to the destination.  Ok, clearly you can see this is coming from a place of trauma, but I digress. We do love a road trip in South Africa. Apart from the natural beauty that is on offer while driving for holiday, work or family reasons, there is something therapeutic about being on the open road, away from the craziness of the big city and daily life. Part of that therapeutic journey involves stopping off on the side of the road to discover something cool, experience something different or chow down on something delicious. All major routes in South Africa have these little spots for you to stretch those legs and refuel yourself (and your vehicle). From standard petrol stations with a good old Wimpy to a pitstop that has wild animals roaming around (yes, that place exists in Mpumalanga), I've put together a list for your next road trip along the open roads of stunning Mzansi, so check it out below. Time Out Tip: This one goes without saying, but please never drink and drive. Ever. We see far too many road fatalities in South Africa as a result of people having a few drinks and hitting the road. We're all for having a good time, it's what we promote at Time Out South Africa, but never should you ever drink and drive. Have fun responsibly, always. Time O
The best places to see lions in the wild in South Africa

The best places to see lions in the wild in South Africa

Our beautiful South Africa is renown for its safaris (trips to the bush for those more au fait), with options available from simply pitching a tent to 5-star luxury lodges. The Big 5 - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo - is the major drawcard when out in the bush (I've got a soft spot for hyenas and pangolins), but of those five, the lion is and always will be the ultimate sighting for many (that's likely down to Simba). It's bucket-list stuff to see a lion in the wild, and if you are lucky enough, you may even see them hunting or with cubs... although they do tend to be rather lazy during daylight hours. Question now is, where can you actually go to see them in the flesh in South Africa? I've produced a list for you, but there is one important factor to remember whenever you go into the natural habitat of a wild animal - there are no guarantees that you will actually see them. That's part of the beauty of a safari - there could be something hiding behind every corner and every bush... there also might not be, so actually finding the animals you are looking for makes it all the more sweeter if/when you do. Time Out Tip: Lions are most active between dusk and dawn, so if you are on a self-drive safari, head out of camp as soon as the gates open and again in the late afternoon ahead of gate closing time. If you are staying where guided drives are available, a sunset or night drive will amplify your chances of seeing these big cats. Time Out South Africa Recommends: 🦁

Epic Golf

Epic Golf

4 out of 5 stars
While golf is very much an individual sport at its core, it seamlessly lends itself to having a great time with your mates - and that's exactly what Epic Golf provides all levels of golfers. No bogeys here (well, a few, but that's due to the calibre of golfer I played with for this review). What is Epic Golf? Located in Diep River and open from Tuesday to Sunday, Epic Golf is a simulator centre featuring four rooms where individuals and groups can practice their game... or just have a laugh with mates. Each sim room allows golfers to test their skills using the Trackman system - the same software used by pros globally. All of your shots - using real clubs which you either bring along or hire at the venue - are analysed and constructive feedback is given on where you can improve. Players have the choice of simply hitting the driving range or playing actual courses from around the world. I chose St Andrews - the Home of Golf - and it was a real blast being able to test my real-world swing on a course that very few ever get to play in the flesh. There is also a putting green, kids' play area, work stations for those lucky enough to not be stuck in an office, and a fully-licensed restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner - as well as ice-cold beverages which help to loosen the swing. The Vibe I love my golf, so it is refreshing to see that there is now a venue in this area of Cape Town that ticks more than just one box when looking for a great golfing time out. The sta
Golden Valley Hotel, Worcester

Golden Valley Hotel, Worcester

3 out of 5 stars
For many, Worcester is often viewed as a pit stop destination and merely a chance to stretch the legs on the way to and from Cape Town along the N1 route to Johannesburg. However, a lot of time and effort has been put into making the area a tourist destination in its own right - and the Golden Valley Hotel is one such attraction working to change the minds of both Capetonians and tourists alike when it comes to holidays and weekend breaks. Located in the Breede Valley, the hotel is surrounded by natural beauty, from the rugged yet pretty Klein Karoo vegetation to the Hex River Mountains to the north and the Du Toitskloof and Slanghoek Mountain ranges to the west. It’s the perfect base from which to explore this beautiful part of South Africa, which is home to a selection of the most delicious wines our Cape region has to offer and some of the best golf I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Why stay at Golden Valley Hotel? There is a very chilled vibe about Golden Valley Hotel, which makes it a great spot to simply take a load off for the weekend or a longer stay. The Cape-Dutch-styled hotel has recently undergone a revamp and now features elegant Victorian charm across its  97 rooms and common areas. Fun fact: Following the closure of Cape Town's Table Bay Hotel for their own revamp, Sun International gifted a number of the hotel's high-end furnishings and decorative fittings to Golden Valley to be incorporated into the Worcester attraction's new look and feel. The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

4 out of 5 stars
I've lived the majority of my life in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, so I am a little annoyed that it took me nearly four decades to visit this wonderful hotel, located pretty much on my doorstep in Constantia. If you love comfort, historical significance, great service, and delicious food, then The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel is that spot. Throw into the mix a stunning nine acres of gardens to explore and a whole host of activities to partake in - both at the hotel and in the surrounding area, and you have an adventure awaiting you which is sure to satisfy your need to relax and be pampered. I know that is how I felt when I sadly had to check out... Why stay at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel? I'm not going to go into a full history lesson on the hotel and its property; just know that its roots date all the way back to 1693 and it's definitely a big plus as to why you should book your stay. I'd also highly recommend asking a member of staff to take you around the property, as the nuggets of information will make your stay all the more richer - as it did for me. Over and above that, there is a warmth to the hotel. It feels like you are at home. I know that sometimes sounds a bit cheesy, but it's true. From the lovely staff to the homely feel of the rooms - not to mention its prime location - it is well worth checking out. What are the rooms like at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel? The hotel is home to 51 guest rooms, suites, and villas. I was afforded the opportunity to stay in one of t

Cape Town restaurant lands on global hot list for 2026

Cape Town restaurant lands on global hot list for 2026

"Think seafood reimagined through León’s visionary lens, paired with an exquisite list of South Africa’s natural ocean ingredients." Those were Cape Town City Editor Selene Brophy's thoughts when she attended the December 2025 opening of Amura, the Mount Nelson hotel’s new restaurant led by Michelin-starred Chef Ángel León, the Spanish innovator known globally as “The Chef of the Sea”. Since its grand opening, the marine-driven showstopper has been receiving nothing but praise. In March, Amura featured on TIME's annual list of the World's Greatest Places, which shines a light on 100 extraordinary destinations across hotels, restaurants, and attractions. At the time, Patrick Fisher, General Manager of Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town, said: "From the beginning, Amura was envisioned as a restaurant that would bring together Chef Ángel León's pioneering marine cuisine with the remarkable ingredients and coastal heritage of the Cape. To see this vision acknowledged on a global stage is a proud moment for us all."  And now, Chef León’s home of Andalusian and Cape deliciousness has been thrust into the spotlight again, this time by CN Traveller. Amura has been named on the 2026 Hot List for the Best New Restaurants in the World, alongside with the likes of New York City's trending Kabawa, Singapore's Jin Ting Wan, and Bistro Lolo in Nairobi. Out and About in Cape Town: Best things to do this Workers' Day long weekend!

Another long weekend is here, and while the weather on Saturday is looking a little sad with rain predicted, you do have one extra day to explore Cape Town - Workers' Day on Friday. Recognised as an international holiday since 1891, Workers’ Day only officially became a public holiday in South Africa in 1994, at the dawn of democracy. In a South African context, the holiday serves to remember the country's labour movement, is a celebration of workers' rights, and highlights the role trade unions and the working class played in the country's fight for freedom. If you are looking for something to do this long weekend, we have some ideas below: Take a trip to the Winelands fokkebokVineyard landscape at sunset with mountains in Stellenbosch A trip to the Winelands is always great fun, especially when you know you can head out on a weekday and not worry about work the following day. I can’t wait!” says Kowalczyk. With hit singles such as the above 'Lightning Crashes' and classics 'I Alone', 'Selling The Drama', and 'Overcome', fans are in for a real treat at Kirstenbosch, with their anthemic music set to sync perfectly with the natural beauty of the setting. This is not Live's first tour of South Africa. I was lucky enough to see them at the Bellville Velodrome back in the early 2000s, where they put on a spectacular show. Here's what to do if you find a stranded turtle in Cape Town

Here's what to do if you find a stranded turtle in Cape Town

If you go down to the beach today... you could be a turtle's hero! With the recent nasty weather - and more expected as winter fully takes hold of Cape Town, turtles are starting to wash up on beaches right around the region. This happens because loggerhead and leatherback turtles are thrown off course as they make their way south along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, using the warm Agulhas Current.  Sadly, as the current slows, the further south the turtles get, many hatchlings and some adult turtles are pushed into colder waters near the Benguela Current. When this happens, turtles - mainly the young - have to fight off icy sea conditions, with the rough nature of the region in autumn and winter causing dehydration and exhaustion. This then leaves the turtles unable to continue their journey and they wash ashore. This phenomenon is called 'Stranding Season' and takes place between February and July. A hatchling's journey Turtle Conservation Centre / Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation How you can help For many, the instinct would be to place the stranded turtles back in the ocean. However, this is the worst thing you could do for our ocean buddies. The reason for this is that the turtles are far too weak to continue with their journey. Many are also covered in barnacles and algae, making their chances of survival slim. Poor little guys! This is where the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) and Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation come to the rescue - with your help. Should you spot a st

Time Out Cape Town got its first taste of the Vuur magic just over a year ago when the Stellenbosch-based restaurant hosted the Rare Tour alongside Los33 from Madrid, Spain. To give you some context, the Rare Tour is a series of global culinary events showcasing some of the globe’s finest chefs from the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants ranking. You can read all about that experience here. At the time of the Rare Tour, fire master Shaun Scrooby's Vuur ranked #88 globally. In 2025, it jumped up one place to #87. Fast forward to 2026 and Scrooby's brilliance has once again been recognised, only this time Vuur has shot up to the 52nd spot on the list. That's 'fire' (as the kids of today may say... it's also clearly a 'joke' made by this father of a 10-year-old)! At its core, the Vuur experience is defined by cooking with fire in its purest form, with courses shaped by smoke, heat, and timing - and let me tell you, it's pretty damn tasty. Read: A Johannesburg steakhouse also made the World's 101 Best cut The Vuur recognition continues Vuur owner and chef Shaun Scrooby at the Eat Out Awards / Supplied To go along with the ranking on the prestigious list, Vuur also took home an accolade from the recently-held Eat Out Awards. Vuur was awarded 2 Stars at the Eat Out Awards, up from the 1 Star it received last year, marking a rare and accelerated rise for a restaurant that only opened a few years ago. “This has been an extraordinary moment for the team,” Scrooby, owner and head ch

We're NOT All Alone in This Together: Dave is coming to Cape Town!

Dave is on his way to Cape Town, folks! David Orobosa Michael Omoregie, better known to the masses as Dave or Santan Dave, will be bringing his unique style to the GrandArena at GrandWest on 6 October 2026. The show forms part of his The Boy Who Played the Harp World Tour. How to buy Dave tickets Three ticket windows have been announced, with the first opening on Wednesday, 25 March to Mastercard holders. On Thursday, 26 March, the Big Concerts Fan Club Presale kicks off, before the General Sale opens to the public on Friday, 27 March. All of the ticket sale windows open at 9am on their respective days. Who is Dave? What?! You don't know Dave? Born in Brixton in South London, Dave is a rapper who is unapologetic with his lyrics, often tackling social issues and the problems faced by the people of today. In 2016, Dave hit the mainstream with his track, 'Thiago Silva' (dedicated to the Brazilian footballer of AC Milan, PSG, and Chelsea fame), which he created alongside fellow British artist AJ Tracey. The song received major acclaim, with Complex magazine placing it among "Grime's Most Impactful Songs of the 2010s". Three studio albums have followed, with 'Psychodrama' (2019), 'We're All Alone in This Together' (2021), and 'The Boy Who Played the Harp' (2025) all bolstering his standing as one of the modern era of music's most impactful artists. The impact of 'Psychodrama' earned him the Album of the Year title at the 2020 Brit Awards - a big deal given that this was his first

Whether you are visiting for a romantic dinner with that someone special, a girls' night out, after work dinner with colleagues or a proper session with your mates, Asoka is the type of place where you sit down for a meal, but seamlessly stay long into the night. Laura McCullagh What to eat at Asoka "Asoka’s menu has been designed in keeping with the current trend of 'sharing'. Portions are small enough, yet still generous in flavour for one to enjoy a variety of items instead of the usual starter, main, dessert," says Asoka Head Chef Nicholas Olifant. "Our food is rooted deeply in 'worldly' inspiration, but leans more in the use of Asian seasonings. While we do make use of Maldon, EVOO, and the like, we also choose different soys, miso, mirin, teriyaki, gochujang, chilli oils, curry spices, tikka, and fish sauce." Those flavour inspirations shine through in standout dishes such as the Spicy Gochujang Korean Fried Chicken, Seared Teriyaki Beef Fillet (Chef Nicholas' pick for must-try - "Bright, clean, simple, decadent," he

Tonight on e! There are no Anacondas in Cape Town...

If you go down to Zeekoevlei today... you're not in for a big surprise - and we think some people have been watching far too many e.tv movies following the release of this news! Rumours started circulating earlier in the week that anacondas had taken over Zeekoevlei. This created a bit of panic on social media, with some media houses even reporting on the 'sightings'. It got so out of hand that it prompted the City of Cape Town to come out and squash the talk of these giant snakes infesting the freshwater lake. Their response can be seen below:   Facebook / City of Cape Town So, just to confirm, folks, there are no anacondas in Zeekoevlei and you can sleep easy tonight. Tell me then, where do anacondas live? Anacondas are native to the tropical rainforests of South America, with countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia known for their anaconda populations. The semi-aquatic snakes prefer to spend their time in the water and eat anything from big prey such as jaguars, caimans, capybaras, and deer to smaller prey such as birds, fish, and turtles.  Where is Zeekoevlei? Zeekoevlei is located next to the Cape Flats suburbs of Grassy Park, Lotus River and Pelican Park. It is housed within the Zeekoevlei Nature Reserve, which was declared a protected area in 2000.  A direct translation of Zeekoevlei from Afrikaans into English is 'Hippopotamus Pond'. While there are no known hippos that inhabit Zeekoevlei, in the past, hippos have gone on an advent
Is this Cape Town's most unique calamari?

Is this Cape Town's most unique calamari?

"This is just like Greece, only we don't have the dolphins swimming past," I overhear a Greek gentleman saying, clad in his suit jacket, fresh out of a conference, beer in hand, as I take my ocean-facing seat at Tobago's Restaurant, Bar, and Terrace at the V&A Waterfront's Radisson Collection Hotel. And he's right. Well, I've never been to Greece (trusting you here, buddy), but I have been to other Mediterranean countries, and the setting at Tobago's has that same charm, same vibe and same insistence on taking a step back from the craziness of life. And that's what makes this ocean-front spot so worth a visit. It's in the Waterfront precinct, but it's withdrawn from the chaos, creating an oasis of sorts in an area which is generally buzzing. The seagulls pop by to say "hi", the dolphins cruise past, and, if you are lucky, you may spot an otter or two on the gentle waves, which is quite the experience. Time Out Cape Town / Andrew Hallett But while the view and setting are everything you'd want as a backdrop to a meal, the reason I was here was to give the food a try - and one particular option on their menu caught my eye instantly. I'm a big fan of calamari done right. Usually, 'done right' means a healthy portion of tartar sauce, with the tangy condiment complementing the, hopefully, lightly battered and perfectly fried calamari. As a Capetonian, I am so used to eating my calamari this way that when I saw Tobago's had veered from the traditional (local, that is) and opted f
A Squeeze of Orange: How to celebrate South Africa’s 367th Wine Birthday

A Squeeze of Orange: How to celebrate South Africa’s 367th Wine Birthday

On 2 February 1659, South Africa's incredible wine journey officially began, with wine made from Cape-grown grapes documented for the very first time. By the mid-17th century, the region had become a crucial stop along global sea routes, where fertile land and favourable conditions encouraged cultivation - and what we have today is the envy of many around the world. Since that glorious day (we say as we raise a glass to our winemakers), the wine industry in South Africa has taken off, sparking a tradition that has evolved over generations. Celebrated annually, the South African Wine Birthday honours the origins of an industry that has grown into one of the Cape’s defining cultural expressions and most important industries. So how exactly does one celebrate such an important day in our history? Well, One&Only Cape Town - known as the pinnacle of ultra-luxury design, authentic experiences, and genuine hospitality - will be hosting an event that truly honours the legacy and importance of the South African wine industry. One&Only Cape Town - South African Wine Birthday What's happening at One&Only Cape Town? On Friday, 30 January, from 16h00 to 20h00, a celebration of the 367th South African Wine Birthday will take place at One&Only Cape Town, under the theme 'A Squeeze of Orange'. This year is all about amber hues and the artistry involved, with orange wine given its chance to shine. Known for its depth, texture, and layered character, this style of wine offers something diff
