The world’s 20 best cities for food right now

The world’s 20 best cities for food right now

This list is from 2025. Check out the latest ranking here. In January, we published our annual ranking of the world’s best cities. To create the list, we quizzed city-dwellers on everything from happiness and nightlife to walkability – and while all these factors are important in making a city great, let’s face it: a city is nothing without its food. From street eats to fine dining, family-run taverns to cutting-edge kitchens, eating and drinking is the backbone of local culture in our cities and the reason many of us choose to travel.  So, in order to figure out the great culinary metropolises of today, we surveyed thousands of people around the world about food in their city. We asked locals to rate their city’s food scene across 18 different criteria, including quality, affordability and attributes from ‘family-friendly’ to ‘experimental’.  Each city was ranked according to quality and affordability ratings, alongside a score from a panel of Time Out food experts – editors, food critics and Time Out Market chefs – who were asked to share their insights into the most exciting cities for food right now. To create the final ranking, we included only the highest-scoring city for each country to ensure the list reflects culinary cities globally. We then asked our global network of food writers to tell us exactly what makes their city such an exciting place to eat right now. The result? A very tasty list indeed. In each of these 20 cities, you’ll find the best of the old-school
The best winter menu specials in Cape Town

The best winter menu specials in Cape Town

Cape Town’s food scene has become one of the most exciting reflections of the city's multicultural, slightly chaotic approach (in the best way) to seasonal winter flavours.Across the city, chefs are drawing on Japanese ramen bars, Thai spice markets, East Asian small plates, Italian comfort food, African coastal ingredients and Cape nose-to-tail cooking - while still grounding their menus in local produce.  One minute, you could be slurping deeply savoury ramen on Bree Street at Yatai, the next you’re eating Thai-inspired winter dishes at Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia. Settle into the rich simplicity of Giorgio Nava’s silky Chicken Alfredo from Carne (winter comfort in a bowl!). The ocean flavours and African storytelling at Seebamboes and COY are inspirational. While the bottomless bubbles will fire up your Sundays at The Pot Luck Club. Equally enticing is how confidently Cape Town chefs are blurring the line between fine dining and comfort food. At Test Kitchen Fledgelings, Korean fried chicken sits comfortably alongside smoked snoek pĂątĂ© and bone marrow brioche. The Belly of the Beast Group is giving East City’s ever-evolving food culture life, where menus are driven less by rigid structure and more by the seasonal intention for that particular day. The results are a winter menu offerings that take risks without losing its local food instinct or dialect! So go on, be adventurous - don't just stick to your favourites. The 28 best breakfast and brunch spots in Cape Town

The 28 best breakfast and brunch spots in Cape Town

As much as Cape Town is a hotspot for nightlife, it’s also a city that knows how to make mornings count. Step out in the city on a Saturday and you’ll see pelotons of cyclists powering south down the peninsula. Surfers strap boards to the roof in search of the best surf breaks in Cape Town, Park Run events are packed, and runners pound the pavement on the Sea Point Prom or tackle the endless trails of Table Mountain. All of which means that by the time the sun is up, half the city has earned their breakfast. And those sleeping in after the night before? Well, they deserve a good feed. Happily, Cape Town has no shortage of sublime spots for breakfast and brunch, whether you’re in the city or the suburbs. The city’s coffee culture is as complex as the artisan hand-roasted beans being ground by bearded baristas, and bakeries turn out pastries so good they’ll make a Parisian weep. And the melting pot of the city’s kitchens comes to the fore here too, whether it’s shakshuka from the Levant or a southern-style chicken waffle. Brunch might come with bubbles (local Cap Classique, of course) and plant-leaning cafĂ©s (Cape Town’s vegetarian restaurants are sublime) pile bowls with greens and grains. All of which means you’re spoilt for choice when deciding where to go for breakfast or brunch in Cape Town. Take a seat, and check out these local favourites. The 50 best cities in the world in 2025

The 50 best cities in the world in 2025

This list is from 2025. Our latest ranking for 2026 is live here. People who don’t live in cities will tell you they’re busy, lonely and expensive places. But there’s a reason so many people choose to live in them: with world-class art and culture, unbeatable food and nightlife, buzzing neighbourhoods and a dizzying amount of stuff to do and see, there’s simply no better place to be.  Every year, we take the pulse of city living by quizzing thousands of locals across the planet about life in their hometowns. This year, more than 18,500 city-dwellers shared their insights on everything from food, nightlife and culture to affordability, happiness and the overall city vibe. When urban living can sometimes feel isolating and costly, this year we wanted to get a sense of what, exactly, makes a city feel like home. Sure, the nightlife is great, but is the city safe and walkable? Is good quality food and art available at a reasonable price? Is it easy to make friends, find love, and access nature?  Livability was a key factor in our ranking this year. But a great city to live in is, naturally, a great city to visit. So, along with the thousands of responses from locals around the world, we asked Time Out’s global network of city experts to vote on the places they think are particularly exciting right now. After crunching all that data, here we are: Time Out’s definitive ranking of the world’s best cities in 2025. Read on to see how your hometown fared

Fun Facts about the Kruger National Park

As someone fortunate enough to have visited the Kruger National Park many times since childhood, I may be biased in saying this. Still, there are few other places around the world that come close to the pure relaxation and tranquillity this natural wonderland has to offer. From the flowing waters of the many rivers to the changing landscapes which bring about so much natural beauty, the Kruger is that one place where you can take a step back from the troubles of life and simply let go. To celebrate all the wild and wonderful aspects of the Kruger, below are some facts about the world-famous game reserve that will only fuel your desire to pack your bags and head off on the trip of a lifetime. The best road trip pitstops in South Africa

The best road trip pitstops in South Africa

"It's not about the destination, but the journey..." Or something like that. Try telling that to screaming kids who, for the 303rd time in an hour, believe asking, "Are we there yet?" is going to make the car instantly teleport to the destination.  Ok, clearly you can see this is coming from a place of trauma, but I digress. We do love a road trip in South Africa. Apart from the natural beauty that is on offer while driving for holiday, work or family reasons, there is something therapeutic about being on the open road, away from the craziness of the big city and daily life. Part of that therapeutic journey involves stopping off on the side of the road to discover something cool, experience something different or chow down on something delicious. All major routes in South Africa have these little spots for you to stretch those legs and refuel yourself (and your vehicle). From standard petrol stations with a good old Wimpy to a pitstop that has wild animals roaming around (yes, that place exists in Mpumalanga), I've put together a list for your next road trip along the open roads of stunning Mzansi, so check it out below. Time Out Tip: This one goes without saying, but please never drink and drive. Ever. We see far too many road fatalities in South Africa as a result of people having a few drinks and hitting the road. We're all for having a good time, it's what we promote at Time Out South Africa, but never should you ever drink and drive. Have fun responsibly, always. Time O
The best places to see lions in the wild in South Africa

The best places to see lions in the wild in South Africa

Our beautiful South Africa is renown for its safaris (trips to the bush for those more au fait), with options available from simply pitching a tent to 5-star luxury lodges. The Big 5 - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo - is the major drawcard when out in the bush (I've got a soft spot for hyenas and pangolins), but of those five, the lion is and always will be the ultimate sighting for many (that's likely down to Simba). It's bucket-list stuff to see a lion in the wild, and if you are lucky enough, you may even see them hunting or with cubs... although they do tend to be rather lazy during daylight hours. Question now is, where can you actually go to see them in the flesh in South Africa? I've produced a list for you, but there is one important factor to remember whenever you go into the natural habitat of a wild animal - there are no guarantees that you will actually see them. That's part of the beauty of a safari - there could be something hiding behind every corner and every bush... there also might not be, so actually finding the animals you are looking for makes it all the more sweeter if/when you do. Time Out Tip: Lions are most active between dusk and dawn, so if you are on a self-drive safari, head out of camp as soon as the gates open and again in the late afternoon ahead of gate closing time. If you are staying where guided drives are available, a sunset or night drive will amplify your chances of seeing these big cats. Time Out South Africa Recommends: 🩁

Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa

Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa

5 out of 5 stars
There is something special about Mhondoro. It draws you in. It captivates you. It allows for an escape that makes you the hero of the tale. It's bush luxury dialled up quite a few notches with its outstanding service and true beauty. It's opulence wrapped in a leopard-print shirt. If you are looking for a break from the craziness of Johannesburg and surrounds, this is it. You don't have to lift a finger. You just need to be present. Why stay at Mhondoro? Mhondoro is a bush getaway where everything is taken care of. It affords the visitor the opportunity to completely switch off from the outside world and fall head first into a stay that is truly memorable. From the moment you are welcomed on the Mhondoro farm a few minutes away from the Welgevonden Game Reserve (in which Mhondoro is located) right up until you are dropped back at the farm at the end of your stay, you are made to feel as if you deserve this. You are the number one priority. You are the star of your own bushveld story. I was fortunate enough to be part of a group that stayed in the Villa of Mhondoro. While I can't speak for the other accommodation available on the property, of which there are many, what I can tell you is that the Villa is absolutely magnificent. From your own butler service to a private chef cooking up incredible meals, the more you explore the Villa, the more incredible it becomes. A private spa, gym, pool, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and the most spectacular views from one of the three
Epic Golf

Epic Golf

4 out of 5 stars
While golf is very much an individual sport at its core, it seamlessly lends itself to having a great time with your mates - and that's exactly what Epic Golf provides all levels of golfers. No bogeys here (well, a few, but that's due to the calibre of golfer I played with for this review). What is Epic Golf? Located in Diep River and open from Tuesday to Sunday, Epic Golf is a simulator centre featuring four rooms where individuals and groups can practice their game... or just have a laugh with mates. Each sim room allows golfers to test their skills using the Trackman system - the same software used by pros globally. All of your shots - using real clubs which you either bring along or hire at the venue - are analysed and constructive feedback is given on where you can improve. Players have the choice of simply hitting the driving range or playing actual courses from around the world. I chose St Andrews - the Home of Golf - and it was a real blast being able to test my real-world swing on a course that very few ever get to play in the flesh. There is also a putting green, kids' play area, work stations for those lucky enough to not be stuck in an office, and a fully-licensed restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner - as well as ice-cold beverages which help to loosen the swing. The Vibe I love my golf, so it is refreshing to see that there is now a venue in this area of Cape Town that ticks more than just one box when looking for a great golfing time out. The sta
Golden Valley Hotel, Worcester

Golden Valley Hotel, Worcester

3 out of 5 stars
For many, Worcester is often viewed as a pit stop destination and merely a chance to stretch the legs on the way to and from Cape Town along the N1 route to Johannesburg. However, a lot of time and effort has been put into making the area a tourist destination in its own right - and the Golden Valley Hotel is one such attraction working to change the minds of both Capetonians and tourists alike when it comes to holidays and weekend breaks. Located in the Breede Valley, the hotel is surrounded by natural beauty, from the rugged yet pretty Klein Karoo vegetation to the Hex River Mountains to the north and the Du Toitskloof and Slanghoek Mountain ranges to the west. It’s the perfect base from which to explore this beautiful part of South Africa, which is home to a selection of the most delicious wines our Cape region has to offer and some of the best golf I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Why stay at Golden Valley Hotel? There is a very chilled vibe about Golden Valley Hotel, which makes it a great spot to simply take a load off for the weekend or a longer stay. The Cape-Dutch-styled hotel has recently undergone a revamp and now features elegant Victorian charm across its  97 rooms and common areas. Fun fact: Following the closure of Cape Town's Table Bay Hotel for their own revamp, Sun International gifted a number of the hotel's high-end furnishings and decorative fittings to Golden Valley to be incorporated into the Worcester attraction's new look and feel. The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

4 out of 5 stars
I've lived the majority of my life in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, so I am a little annoyed that it took me nearly four decades to visit this wonderful hotel, located pretty much on my doorstep in Constantia. If you love comfort, historical significance, great service, and delicious food, then The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel is that spot. Throw into the mix a stunning nine acres of gardens to explore and a whole host of activities to partake in - both at the hotel and in the surrounding area, and you have an adventure awaiting you which is sure to satisfy your need to relax and be pampered. I know that is how I felt when I sadly had to check out... Why stay at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel? I'm not going to go into a full history lesson on the hotel and its property; just know that its roots date all the way back to 1693 and it's definitely a big plus as to why you should book your stay. I'd also highly recommend asking a member of staff to take you around the property, as the nuggets of information will make your stay all the more richer - as it did for me. Over and above that, there is a warmth to the hotel. It feels like you are at home. I know that sometimes sounds a bit cheesy, but it's true. From the lovely staff to the homely feel of the rooms - not to mention its prime location - it is well worth checking out. What are the rooms like at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel? The hotel is home to 51 guest rooms, suites, and villas. I was afforded the opportunity to stay in one of t

Touch, Pause, Engage: Your ultimate guide to the Nations Championship

Rugby is entering a new era with the introduction of the Nations Championship. Kicking off in July 2026, the tournament will see the world's top rugby nations competing for the chance to lift the shiny new trophy in November 2026. Our beloved Springboks are, of course, taking part. The four-time World Champions will be looking to back up their back-to-back World Cup triumphs and prove once again why they are the best rugby side in the world. But what exactly is the Nations Championship? Why is it being played in July and November? Where are the matches taking place?  We have all the answers to those questions and more right here. What is the Nations Championship? In years gone by, northern hemisphere teams would tour the southern hemisphere in the middle of the year, with the reverse happening at the end of the year. While these Test matches have always carried weight (rugby is always serious, boet!), there was no real trophy on the line for the best side of the year. Bragging rights, yes, but no overall trophy. That is about to change. Who is playing? Twelve nations from both hemispheres will take part. From 26 to 28 June 2026, The Glen will be transformed into a battlefield, as some of the country's best gamers lock controllers and keyboards for the MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience. For the past four years, the tournament has pitted gamers from all around South Africa against each other at shopping malls. With a prize purse of R350,000 across the series - which sees tournaments take place at eight different shopping malls, MTN SHIFT Gaming Experience's goal is to open the world of e-sports up to as many people as possible, with players of all levels taking part. The action has already started ahead of the weekend's festivities, with an EAFC 26 online qualifier taking place on 21 June. The top four players from the qualifying series have now secured their spot for the in-person The Glen Mall Final this weekend. For those who could not participate in the online qualifier, never fear. Players can also enter into one of the 12 in-centre heats this weekend. Mhondoro magic: Bush luxury just 3 hours from Johannesburg

Earlier this week, I published a review of the incredible experience I had at Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa, located within the Welgevonden Game Reserve in the Waterberg. If you haven't had a chance to read the review yet, do yourself a favour and check it out below. Review: Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa Since the review went live, Time Out Johannesburg has released a social media reel highlighting some of the amazing elements of what Mhondoro has to offer. From Big 5 game viewing (the leopards let me down) to pure luxury accommodation, check out the reel below and live vicariously through me. An added bonus is that the Waterberg region is malaria-free, which is a big win for families who may be a bit apprehensive of the mozzies in other areas of the country. Another option for a Waterberg safari escape is Qwabi, which has two camps. You can read my review from 2025 of the adults-only camp here or a
Peter Pan is flying into Cape Town this winter

Peter Pan is flying into Cape Town this winter

With the winter school holidays fast approaching, we can hear parents right across Cape Town let out a bit of a groan. Yes, we love our kids, but let's be honest, keeping them happy and the dreaded "I'm bored" out of their mouths during the school holidays can be tough. Well, fear not, groaning parents. We've just been let in on a secret which will go a long way in putting a smile on your young ones' faces. Peter Pan is coming to Canal Walk! Who doesn't love the story of Peter Pan? The classic tale of Wendy, John, Michael, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, and Peter is a timeless classic. Author J.M. Barrie’s brilliant literary work has been turned into countless film and theatre adaptations over the years - and the latest version is coming to Canal Walk in Cape Town from 27 June to 19 July 2026. In what will be the 24th production to take to the Centre Court stage, Peter Pan is expected to bring a sprinkle of fairy dust to the shopping mall, with kids aged two and up invited to join in on the fun. Killian Blerk will star as Peter Pan, Rachael Saunders as Wendy Darling, and Kaira Naidoo as Tinker Bell, while Jeremy Richard will take on the dual role of Mr Darling and the terrible Captain Hook.  "Peter Pan gave us the chance to bring flight, fairy dust, and a touch of mischief to the Canal Walk stage," say co-directors Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer. "J.M. Barrie’s story has lasted more than a century because it asks a simple question: what would it mean to never gro
Kehlani is coming to Johannesburg this Festive Season

Kehlani is coming to Johannesburg this Festive Season

Following last week's news that Limp Bizkit will be rolling into Johannesburg this December, Big Concerts have popped another surprise on our feeds in the shape of Kehlani's World Tour. The double Grammy Award winner and R&B superstar will be performing at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on 15 December 2026 as part of her THE KEHLANI WORLD TOUR. To add even more excitement to the highly-anticipated show, it has been announced that Destin Conrad will be the support act for the shows in Gauteng and Cape Town. Conrad is a Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter from Florida. Kehlani won their two Grammy Awards in 2026 for the smash hit song, 'Folded', from their 2025 album, 'Kehlani'. Their journey to the top of the music world began in 2011 when they were a member of the PopLyfe group, which took the world by storm on 'America's Got Talent'. Since going solo, Kehlani, who was born in Oakland, California, has released five albums and hit the heights of number six on the Billboard Hot 100, with her Grammy wins sealing her status as one of the world's biggest stars in 2026. Where to buy Kehlani tickets As has become the case with Big Concerts shows, there will be three windows in which to purchase tickets, which are as follows: Wednesday, 17 June: Mastercard cardholders here from 9am Thursday, 18 June: Big Concerts Fan Club members here from 9am Friday, 19 June: General sale here from 9am Listen to Kehlani's 'Folded' below: RECOMMENDED: đŸ›ïžÂ Where to stay in Johannesburg🏹 The
This is how Bafana Bafana will score us an extra public holiday

This is how Bafana Bafana will score us an extra public holiday

Late last month, our dear President gave Bafana Bafana the ultimate incentive to win the World Cup - a public holiday for all of us back home. Exciting, right? Well, kind of. The reality is that as much as we love Bafana Bafana and wish them nothing but the best on the world stage, they aren't exactly the strongest side competing in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Of the 48 teams taking to the field over the next month and a bit, there are about 33 teams I believe to be stronger than our national heroes - with a few more up for debate (happy to meet for a beer to discuss, but you're paying). However, miracles do happen in football. Leicester City won the Premier League at 5000/1 odds. Greece lifted the Euros in 2004. Arsenal got to the Champions League final this year (I'm a disgruntled Spurs fan, let me have this little dig, please). "So you're saying there's a chance?" Kind of. Well, maybe not, but I want that extra public holiday! Everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - would need to fall into place for Bafana Bafana to advance deep into the tournament and lift the most coveted trophy in football. So that got us thinking at Time Out Johannesburg... what exactly is the 'everything' that needs to happen? Here's our dream scenario. Group Stage It doesn't get much tougher than the opening match of a World Cup against the host nation in front of their passionate fans. A 2-0 defeat against Mexico sees Bafana Bafana needing two positive results from their remaining group stag
Get ready for your 2026 'Couch to the Koppies' challenge!

Get ready for your 2026 'Couch to the Koppies' challenge!

We've been big advocates for people to visit the Heritage Site that is Melville Koppies ever since we launched Time Out Johannesburg last year. Why? Well, not only does it afford Joburgers with an escape from the city within the city, but its natural beauty and spectacular views put it right up there in the 'South Africa's scenic hikes' debate. If you haven't had the chance to visit - or needed this as a reminder to go again, we spoke to Melville Koppies volunteer Jenny Grice to help convince you to get off the couch and out into the wild. Think of this as your 2026 'Couch to the Koppies' challenge. "Those of us who volunteer at Melville Koppies are always delighted at how happy and grateful people are when they complete their hike, stroll or guided tour. When they arrive, there’s always a little trepidation on the part of visitors – will they get lost on the path, will they enjoy their adventure, is it worth the money and time that they’ve expended to get to the Koppies?" Grice shares. "Almost always when people leave it’s with a ‘thank you, we had a wonderful hike’, ‘you’re doing such great work, well done’, ‘we’ll definitely come again, we didn’t know this place existed’ or something along those lines. Often people meet others on the group activities and become life-long friends." InstagramMelville Koppies "Come and visit and experience the Koppies for yourself. We’re open every Sunday morning from 8am to 11.30am. Self-guide yourself on the 5km hiking trail and 3km herit
