The accommodation you choose plays an integral role in your experience of a destination – and Cape Town more or less has it all: stylish boutique hotels, five-star hideaways, private villas with jaw-dropping views, intimate guesthouses, backpackers’ lodges, and more. The choice is incredibly varied. In addition, rural boltholes can be found fairly close to the city, in tree-lined suburbs, or in the Winelands.

You can’t turn a corner these days without seeing a construction site for another hotel in Cape Town. With the FIFA 2010 World Cup around the corner the challenge is on to make sure there are enough beds in the city. The most recent notable addition to the luxury scene has been the opening of the One & Only Cape Town in the V&A Waterfront, an event that attracted a sprinkling of international celebs. But you don’t have to pay the earth for a comfortable and fun stay in this city: there are funky spots galore too, like the quirky Grand Daddy, with its unique airstream trailer park on the penthouse.

Prices & information

The accommodation prices given in this guide refer to the rack rates for standard double rooms, unless otherwise indicated. These rates should give you an idea of what to expect to pay, but prices vary dramatically with the season. Prices rise greatly during the summer high season and rates are also higher on the Atlantic seaboard, but then the views are often worth the price.

During winter, bargains can be found, especially via www.capetownonsale.com – the room sale runs from the end of May to end of September. Self-catering accommodation is becoming increasingly popular; see below.

If you’ve left booking a little late try www.mtbeds.co.za, while www.sa-venues.co.za is a particularly useful site when looking for accommodation around South Africa.

Note that ‘BAR’ in listings information stands for Best Available Rate. This rate is dependent on the number of available rooms in a hotel at a given time, as well as at the time of booking. It’s computer-generated, so you’ll be hard-pressed to haggle a better price.

We’ve listed a selection of services for each hotel, detailing everything from in-room entertainment to parking. Prices for internet access and parking are for any given 24-hour period unless stated.

Self-catering

Self-catering takes on a whole new meaning with these stylish spots. For those who relish their privacy while on holiday, there are some superb self-catering options to choose from in the city.

Enjoy a beautiful Atlantic Ocean view from your private apartment at Bali Bay Apartments, or opt for inner-city chic at the swanky serviced apartments, complete with all the expected five-star luxuries and facilities, at Cape Royale Luxury Hotel & Residence. The Peninsula All Suite Hotel, meanwhile, is an ideally central spot for those on extended holiday stays, and families are welcomed with open arms.

For something that’s up there in the style stakes, why not book a private villa? Cape Portfolios specialises in Camps Bay villa rental and has a wide choice of accommodation on its books: Camps Bay Villa is a popular bet with visiting film crews and international movers and shakers.

Those who enjoy the cosmopolitan vibe of De Waterkant will feel absolutely at home in any of the properties belonging to Village & Life – the company also has properties in the Waterfront, nearby Mouille Point and Camps Bay.

Other recommended swanky private villa rentals on this side of the mountain include Eleven Sedgemoor Road and Lion’s View. And Icon Villas has a phenomenal collection across the peninsula and further off the Western Cape, among them super-swanky properties like Bridge House in the leafy Higgovale.

If you’d prefer a quieter stay on the southern side of the peninsula, book a room at the St James, just a stone’s throw from the sea and the St James catwalk, or make a group booking for the architect-designed Bishop’s View in the quaint fishing village of Kalk Bay. Closer to Cape Point Nature Reserve and close to nature, meanwhile, South Winds is a charming Cape Cod clapboard home with uninterrupted sea views.

Hot beds

Cape Town is certainly one of the most picturesque cities on the continent, and visitors to the Mother City are spoilt for choice when it comes to interesting or dramatic places to stay. If blow-the-budget experiences are what you’re after, check into the swanky One & Only.

The five-star setup is located in the heart of the V&A Waterfront and boasts magnificent views, impeccable service and two of the most exciting restaurants in the city, Nobu and Maze.

At the Airstream Penthouse Trailer Park, guests check in to vintage Airstream trailers on top of the four-star Grand Daddy hotel in the heart of the city. Each trailer has been individually decorated by a local artist.

The well-priced Protea Hotel Fire & Ice, also know as the Extreme Hotel is a popular pit stop for thrill-seekers, who use it as a base for adrenaline-based adventures (the external five-storey climbing wall is a dead giveaway). Be sure to swim in the glass-walled pool and take a ride in the ‘shark cage’ elevator.

At Tintswalo Atlantic in Hout Bay you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve washed up on a deserted (albeit ultra-luxurious) island. Tucked away out of sight under Chapman’s Peak, this secret ten-suite lodge boasts exquisite, uninterrupted views of the ocean, sumptuous decor and quality cuisine.

And for a true top-of-the-world experience, book a place on the Hoerikwaggo Trail (www.sanparks.org). You’ll spend the nights in a tented camp on Table Mountain, looked after and catered for by your guide.
