Crowds gather for an evening's entertainment - © Kirstenbosch Sundowner Concerts
There’s always something happening in Cape Town, but it’s not always possible to say when. In true laid-back Mother City fashion, plans are made and cancelled on a whim. This adds to the improvisatory feel of the place, but does make forward planning rather difficult. Thus many of our Calendar events are pencilled in, rather than set in stone.
During the summer Capetonians are treated to a range of outdoorsy festivals and events, be they sports-, culture- or music-related. Be sure to keep an eye on the local press for updates, or phone the Cape Town Tourism Bureau for the latest on what’s going on.

A multicultural festival named after the Mother City’s feisty south-easterly wind, which is famous for playing havoc on the streets, chasing runaway skirts and acrobatic plastic bags. The festival aims to promote the art world’s Big Five – dance, music, theatre, film and fine art. Offerings range from mainstream to arthouse with a special focus on
productions in Afrikaans.
Where: City Centre
When: 1-2 Jan
There’s something about the luminous multi-coloured satin suits and frenetic banjo-strumming of the Cape Minstrels that puts Capetonians in the party mood. The tradition has roots in the practices associated with slavery, when 2 January was given as a holiday to the slaves. Today singers and musicians still march through the streets of the Mother City (usually along Wale Street) complete with face paint, twirling parasols and some infectious beats, while ringing in the tweede nuwejaar (second new year).

Where: Maynardville Open-Air Theatre
When: early Jan-late Feb
The annual Shakespeare-in-Maynardville experience is an essential experience, as is the preceding picnic in the park. Each year sees a different Bard-production brought to life on the tree-shrouded stage. Be sure to bring a blanket or two, as the open-air theatre gets quite chilly in the evenings.

Unless you want to be sent home in shame, don’t bother showing up unless you’re in costume. Better yet, create a themed uniform your entire entourage can sport. Every queen, prince and princess goes to town – and often beyond – to exhibit their interpretation of the year’s theme. From ‘shopping trolleys’ and ‘weddings’ to ‘comic strips’, no expense is spared to make this the most decadent themed event on the gay calendar.

A sort of gay tea dance or hoedown. The music is probably the most varied on earth, ranging from boeremusiek to rave and kwaito (with everything in between thrown in for good measure).
The Alphen Antiques and Collectables Fairs are held on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month at the Alphen Community Centre Hall, Constantia Main Road (opposite Constantia Village), from 10am - 4pm. The murder mystery is set in modern day New York and the characters are all upstanding New York citizens with something unique that sets them apart from the rest of society – they’re Immortals.
The occasion is Christian Black’s annual Halloween Ball, where the rich and famous gather to show off their fame and fortune. It’s also the setting for the annual covert meeting of the Council of Immortals. At the Ball, Head Watcher (an angel of sorts) Gabriel Young is murdered by the use of an extremely rare substance called Qeres. It was formerly used by the ancient Egyptians during the mummification process and while the original recipe has been lost, a minute amount is still left on earth.
Besides being one of the suspects, you will be called upon to attempt to solve this heinous crime, which threatens to overthrow the fragile balance of the Human/Immortal coexistence. Are you up for the challenge?

After an almost two-year absence, The Cape Town Book Fair is back – remodelled and set to impress. The Fair will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 15 – 17 June.
Previously an annual event, last year the organisers announced that the Cape Town Book Fair would become a biennial event, starting in 2012. To support this re-launch, the Fair is under new management and has undergone an impressive branding transformation too, with a revamped logo, website and new marketing material.
High expectations for this year’s Fair
Organisers are confident that this year’s Fair will far outdo expectations: they’re anticipating an exciting mix of representatives from the African, Arab and Asian publishing worlds.
They’re also expecting a positive spill-over from the 29th International Publishers Association (IPA) Congress, which is being hosted in Cape Town from 12 – 14 June. This will be the first time in over 100 years that this Congress will be hosted in Africa.
Book lovers are in for a treat
As usual, bookworms can look forward to exhibitions by aspiring and published authors, book associations, book distributors, book stores, electronic book traders, libraries, literary agents, printers, publishers and repro agents.
So far, confirmed exhibitors include Paarl Media, Juta and Company, Protea Boekhuis, Pan Macmillan South Africa, Shuter & Shooter Publishers and Cambridge University Press amongst others.
Although the final programme is yet to be confirmed, there will be book launches, book signings, author interviews, literary workshops and forums, and a poetry corner on offer. There will also be a dedicated digital zone for eBook fans, as well as a cookbook corner for culinary demonstrations.
For younger visitors, there will be a kids’ zone with exciting literary activities. And, of course, there will be an impressive social events calendar too.
Ticket prices, times and other information
General entrance will cost R60 per day. Students and pensioners will pay R30, while entrance will be free for accompanied children under 12. Tickets will go on sale through Computicket towards the end of March.
The morning of 15 June will be reserved for trade visitors only. Thereafter, the Fair will be open to the general public as follows: Friday, 15 June: 14h00 – 22h00; Saturday, 16 June: 09h00 – 18h00, and Sunday, 17 June: 09h00 – 17h00.
For updates, attendees can sign up to receive the Cape Town Book Fair newsletter at www.capetownbookfair.com. News will also be posted on the Fair’s Facebook page (“Cape Town Book Fair”) and via Twitter (@CptBookFair).
