Since it opened in 1899, the city's undisputed grande dame has played host to a slew of dignitaries and stars and it continues to be a hotel of choice for well-heeled travellers. It is imbued with an elegant air that harks back to a time when the pace of life was slower - and one had plenty of staff, of course. The luxury suites, sprawling gardens, large pool and terrace area and swanky new spa make the Mount Nelson a very glamorous place to hang one's hat.
