The Grammy Award-winning duo The Chainsmokers is set to bring their thumping beats to Macau this summer. Fans of EDM can catch Drew Taggart and Alex Pall at The Venetian Macao on Saturday, June 28. Blending pop, dance, indie, electronic, and alt-rock, these two DJs and producers have been known to create chart-topping bangers over the years, such as Don’t Let Me Down featuring Daya, Closer featuring Halsey, Something Just Like This with Coldplay, Takeaway with Illenium and Lennon Stella, and many more. Concert-goers can most likely expect a mix of these iconic hits and newer tracks from The Chainsmokers’ more recent EPs ‘No Hard Feelings’ and ‘Summertime Friends’. Sitting on Wyndham Street among the chaos of the LKF area, Yakiniku Sho brings something different to the table. It's a straightforward Japanese-Korean barbecue joint where quality Wagyu meets the soulful flavours of Korean home cooking – all at prices that won't make your wallet weep. The $490 'Don't Think Yasu' set offers six premium cuts that might include anything from velvety Misuji shoulder to wine-marinated Hokkaido pork ribs, while the $790 'Don't Think Sho' adds premium touches with additions like Wagyu tartare and Hokkaido scallops draped in salmon roe. Recipes were passed down from the owner’s mother, including the homemade kimchi (fermented for three years), spicy tofu hotpot that comes bubbling to your table, and traditional Korean-style steamed egg stuffed with crab meat. They've also got a decent range of sake with pairings chosen to complement both the rich beef and the bolder Korean flavours. While the sets are the stars, à la carte options like the Yaki-Sabu (A5 sirloin with signature sauce) and the gomtang oxtail soup are worth the calories. And their sea salt caramel soft serve is the kind of simple-but-perfect ending this meal deserves. After three local movies pretty much bagged all the wins at the recent Hong Kong Film Awards 2025, there’s been a good bit of interest generated around our cinematic works. Here’s something else for cinephiles to look forward to: the much-anticipated film Sons of the Neon Night should be released this year, and in the meantime, they’re presenting a special exhibition. This upcoming crime thriller is directed, written, and produced by Juno Mak, who spent over four years developing the script and eight years producing the film. Set in a cold, bleak Hong Kong, the movie’s desolate colours and tones match Mak’s signature aesthetics, and is full of the drug killers, murderers, and morally ambiguous policemen that make Hong Kong cinema fun to watch. A Causeway Bay that’s covered in heavy snow is suddenly rocked by a violent explosion – the actions of a drug trafficking syndicate’s heir who surprisingly wants to rid the world of drugs. Photograph: Courtesy Gallery by the Harbour Sons of the Neon Night also features an ensemble cast of Hong Kong screen greats, including Sean Lau and Michelle Wai, who both recently won in their nominated categories at the Hong Kong Film Awards 2025. Takeshi Kaneshiro stars as the leading heir looking to wipe his dark family history; Lau as a double-faced police officer; Louis Koo as a killer with a complicated past; Tony Leung Ka-fai as a psychologist serving the police force; Gao Yuanyuan as a therapist who understands criminals too well; and many more. In order to introduce the public to his alternate Hong Kong and its morally grey inhabitants, Mak has commissioned Spanish sculptor Eudald de Juana Gorriz to create a series of sculptures for the film, including the five main characters. There are also film stills, concept art, and more on display. Immerse yourself into this Hong Kong that is simultaneously familiar and dismally cold at this exhibition, which is running until June 1 at the Gallery by the Harbour space in Harbour City. Rapper, singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, global fashion icon, and pretty much known to the world as the King of K-pop, the multitalented G-Dragon (GD) announced earlier in March 2025 that he will be making his way around Asia for his Übermensch solo world tour, with locations including Hong Kong and Macau. Having just dropped his third studio album 'Übermensch' in February, 12 long years after his second studio album, the K-pop star kicked off the tour on March 29 and 30 in South Korea at Goyang Stadium. He will then continue the tour in May, scheduled to perform in Japan, the Philippines, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and finally, rounding it off in Hong Kong.  When and where is G-Dragon's Übermensch concert in Hong Kong? In a city like ours where competition and rents are steep and consumers’ attention spans are fleeting, keeping a food and beverage business running and popular is not easy. We’ve seen some restaurants and even food delivery companies leave the Hong Kong market in recent months, and now there’s another one to add to the list. Cha chaan teng Daniel’s will be closing down by the end of May this year. A Facebook user shared a photo of a notice displayed outside Daniel’s in Mei Foo, which stated that their lease will soon be up and that their last day of business will be May 29, 2025. The restaurant also thanked Hongkongers for their custom and support over the years since its opening in 1981.  While Daniel’s was in no way the epitome of culinary flair or fantastic Hong Kong flavours, it was still an old reliable cha chaan teng serving affordable fare that citizens would have been used to seeing in their neighbourhoods over its 44 years of operations. Originally a dessert shop – which is why its punny Chinese name references steamed milk pudding – Daniel’s eventually evolved into a Hong Kong-style diner that was an inexpensive fixture in the local food scene. At the peak of Daniel’s business success, it had 24 branches throughout the territories. Right now, the Mei Foo location is its last branch and once it closes next month, another Hong Kong restaurant will have shuttered its doors forever. According to amendments made to the Tobacco Control Legislation published last week, the Hong Kong government is harshly clamping down on smoking in the city. As their next step in the ongoing anti-smoking drive, the government is seeking to ban the possession of e-cigarettes and smoking alternatives by April next year. The bill is going to be tabled at the Legislative Council on Wednesday, but if it is passed, then starting from April 30, 2026, anyone who possesses even small amounts of alternative smoking products in public is liable to be fined $3,000. This is double the fixed fine for smoking violations, such is currently $1,500. The import, manufacture, and sale of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products have been banned since 2022, but not self-possession and usage – though it looks like that will soon change. This new ban will first be enforced in outdoor public spaces before gradually expanding to cover indoor areas as well. Hong Kong residents will also not be allowed to smoke while queuing, in designated areas for public transport, or near the entrance to places with high pedestrian flow, such as sports venues, museums, theme parks, and health centres. Anyone else standing alongside the smoker will constitute a queue, as the rule applies when there are two or more people lining up, including the smoker. Additionally, new zones will be introduced where smoking is prohibited, including within three metres of doorways to schools, hospitals, childcare centres, residential care homes, and more. These policies on no-smoking zones and violation fines will take effect as early as January 1, 2026.  Selling tobacco products to minors has always been illegal, but the sale of alternative smoking products – including electronic or heated cigarettes – to underaged people will soon also result in a fine of up to $50,000 and six months’ imprisonment. Since the government has said that flavoured cigarettes will ‘entice young people to smoke’, these are also in the process of being outlawed, except menthol flavoured cigarettes. This clamp down on flavoured cigarettes is just the first step in a series of phases, and full implementation is expected to take hold in the second quarter of 2027. In honour of their 75th anniversary, Oreo is reaching for the stars – literally. The snack brand collaborated with Sent into Space to launch their signature biscuits into outer space, and posted a video on its YouTube channel, showing a custom spacecraft that took the iconic biscuits into the stratosphere and fired them towards the Milky Way. The 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) took place at Tsim Sha Tsui’s Hong Kong Cultural Centre on April 27, honouring the best of local films and our city’s cinematic talents. A total of 17 Hong Kong films and 5 Asian Chinese-language films were nominated for awards, and if you’ve kept an eye on our city’s movie industry and reviews over the past year, then it should come as no surprise that Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In was pretty much the runaway winner. Soi Cheang’s martial arts epic was nominated in 14 categories at the HKFA 2025, and ended up winning nine awards, for Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Costume & Makeup Design, Best Action Choreography, Best Sound Design, Best Visual Effects, as well as the top prize of Best Film. This action thriller set in the old Kowloon Walled City of the 80s is one of Hong Kong’s most successful pictures in recent years, attracting at least 1.59 million box office views since premiering in May 2024, was chosen to represent our city in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, and was also shown in the Midnight Screening of the Cannes Film Festival 2024. The Last Dance was also a firm favourite for many, receiving the most number of nominations at this year’s HKFA at 18 categories. This drama about a Taoist priest and a wedding planner who team up to run funeral services won a total of five awards, including Best Screenplay, Best Original Film Score, and Best Original Film Song. Notably, Michelle Wai won Best Actress for her work in this film, while Tommy Chu took home the Best Supporting Actor award, winning against other established talents such as Louis Koo, Paul Chun Pui, Siuyea Lo Chun-yip, and Philip Ng. Other nominated actors in the category include Raymond Lam for Twilight of the Warriors, Neo Yau Hawk Sau for The Way We Talk, Michael Hui for The Last Dance, and Aaron Kwok for Rob N Roll. This marks Lau’s fourth win in this category of the HKFA, and just last month, he also won Best Actor for this movie at the 18th Asian Film Awards. In total, Papa clinched three wins last night, including Jo Koo for Best Supporting Actress and Dylan So for Best New Performer. Other notable awards handed out at the HKFA include Robin Lee winning Best New Director for Four Trails, which documents endurance runners taking on one of Hong Kong’s most daunting athletic challenges. The Taiwanese film Old Fox by Hsiao Ya-chuan was also awarded Best Asian Chinese Language Film. Finally, veteran Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark and his long-time professional and romantic partner Shi Nan Sun were both honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for their work in the Hong Kong film industry since the 80s. From children’s books to Japanese manga and Marvel comics, there’s no doubt that illustrated stories hold an important place in the hearts of many. If you enjoy the dynamic art form of comics, then you must check out this limited-time exhibition at the Hong Kong Design Institute. ‘Boundless Passion: The Power of Comic across Cultures’ showcases comics from Hong Kong, Japan, the Czech Republic, and Belgium, while exploring how they were culturally significant and their creativity has influenced other works. Hongkongers will most likely recognise nostalgic local classics like Feel 100% by Jeffrey Lau and Oriental Heroes by Tony Wong – the latter was known as the ‘Godfather of Hong Kong comics’.  Manga fans will be glad to see Japan represented by works such as the humourous Crayon Shin-chan and the global phenomenon Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Meanwhile, visitors can also get acquainted with some distinctive European gems that are not so well known in our side of the globe such as Anča a Pepík and Forget Me Not. It’s not everyday that we get to see such different cultural styles, visual language, and artistic traditions from across the world coming together in a rich dialogue. Just as we thought Hongkongers’ attention spans were shifting more towards other collectibles like Crybaby, Pucky, or Chiikawa, Labubu returns to grab us all by the throat once again. Pop Mart is launching the third edition of their globally famous Labubu series on April 25, and here’s how you might get first dibs. Since Pop Mart is a Chinese brand, they’ve already dropped the goods for the mainland Chinese market online on the evening of April 24. As you might expect of viral items, the plushie monsters have already been seen on second-hand shopping platforms like Carousell with wildly inflated prices – the blind boxes cost RMB99 on the official website, but are being sold for as much as HK$1,500 at the moment. Buying Labubu 3.0 in Hong Kong is slightly different, as sales will be conducted via lottery. Hongkongers have until noon on April 25 to sign up on Pop Mart for their lottery, and the results will be announced at 5pm the same day. Chosen customers will then need to physically go to their pre-chosen Pop Mart store by 9pm on Saturday, April 26, to make their purchases. We are also unable to buy singular Labubu blind boxes and must purchase a carton of six in one go, priced at $720. Each customer can only buy one carton. Featuring tie dye-like gradient colours, the coat of Labubu 3.0 is longer and furrier than previous editions. Its eyes, one tooth, claws, and two-toned ears will also reflect its overall colour scheme. They come in six regular colours – red, light orange, peachy pink and yellow, blue, light green, and purple – while the rare secret colour will be black and grey fur with rainbow eyes and teeth.
