If the 'oldest pub on the island' (Ferry House, see above) sounds like it won't offer enough marinated olives for your liking, you'd better head straight for the Gun. A fine example of gastro as it should be done, the Gun is thoughtfully decked out in dark wood and grey slate tiles, with sofas, bookshelves and huge barrels as stand-up tables. Punters are a classy but unpretentious bunch happy to pay for quality dishes such as braised shin of beef with parsnip purée (£18) and pan-fried lemon sole with new potatoes (£16.50). There are cocktails (espresso martini, £6.50) and endless wines, as well as Abbot Ale, Adnams Broadside, Young's, Guinness, Hoegaarden and more on tap. Best of all is the fantastic decked terrace (heated in winter) with views of the O2 and sporadic river traffic.

I first visited this pub on a pub crawl in November,1966. Naturally I could not find the place again. Many years later my wife gave me Pubs of the River Thames and there was The Gun. Went there and found to be rather down at the heels but the governor was very nice. Thought never to return but a few years later an article in Bon Appetit wrote that The Gun is a very nice "gastro pub." Have gone back 4-5 times since for lunch and just a great place although a bit pricey.
Definitely full marks for this prominent gastro-pub. I find it difficult to fault the place! I had a divine pan-fried trout which really was cooked most impressively. The view is very aesethically pleasing, and the service most definitely came with a smile, whilst being very efficient. I look forward to my next visit.
