Rose Street wasn't always the domain of puzzled tourists sipping pints of Bombardier. Squeezed between Garrick Street and the old Covent Garden market, this dog-leg alleyway was once the haunt of whores and bare-knuckle fighters, the latter hosted at this low-ceilinged tavern when it was called the Bucket of Blood (the poet Dryden was beaten up here in 1679). Today's regulars are now honoured with a photo and a plaque; Robert 'Bob' Townley even has his flat cap framed.

Estrella and Peroni make welcome appearances as draught options, though most seem to stick to bottled Corona or Beck's. Food comprises ploughman's lunches and doorstep sandwiches; heartier meals (sausages, roasts) can be taken upstairs or in the back room.

Two centuries of mounted cuttings and caricatures amplify the sense of character and continuity, although not everyone gets to see them: space is always at a premium, hence the pavement cluster on summer nights.

OK so its not a great restaurant but it is a proper boozer in the centre of London with decent beer well kept, friendly bar staff and a good atmosphere in a historic building. A priceless asset among the chains and over-priced tat in Covent Garden.

Popped in for the first time a few days ago with a few friends and was pleasantly surprised by the great ale selection, of which the very friendly barkeep was more than happy for us to sample before buying our pints. Will start seeking it out when looking for a nice place for a pint in the area now!

Terrible! Visited for Sunday Lunch yesterday in party ok four, Borad outside anvertised Beef and all the trimmings including Cauliflower Cheese, Beef was ok, baked potatoes tasted awful and one could tell they were several days old and warmed up, veg barely cooked, my wifes food was lukewarm and had to be microwaived. we complained about the standard of food and lack of advertised cauliflower cheese but no offer of compensation was made. Worst meal I have had in a long, long time.l

Had a lovely meal there yesterday, shepherds pie with lightly cooked broccoli, delicious. And reasonably priced. The staff were very friendly and polite and helpful. Will defifnitely go again.

Terrible. The biggest achievement was a chicken and mushroom pie - microwaved - which tasted of absolutely nothing. The carrots and peas straight from a tin. The service surly and disinterested, the general appearance dirty (and possibly dangerous - still have a nasty taste in my mouth, two hours later) and a feeling of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It may have been a decent pub at one point - but not now.
