Located behind the Royal Courts of Justice, the tiny, charismatic Seven Stars is the spot where barristers bring their clients for celebratory champagne or commiseratory scotch after a big case.

A glass display case holds a copy of landlady Roxy Beaujolais's cookbook Home from the Inn Contented, a sign that the simple pub food advertised on the blackboard is going to be impressive.

Real ales are the tipple of choice among many of the locals - alongside Adnams Bitter and Broadside, you might find beers from smaller breweries such as Dark Star - but there's also a short, sound list of wines by the glass.

Seats at the tables covered with green and white checked oilcloths are hard to come by, but considerate bar staff do their best to alert customers to vacancies.
