Great Queen Street is a great all-rounder, which you shouldn’t take to mean a restaurant that is merely reliable. The menu here always holds enough interest to seem special, but you can just slope up in your most casual strides and still feel welcome. The vibe is close to that of a gastropub – and indeed the space is a converted pub – but you’re here to eat, not sink a few pints and mop them up with roast pork belly.
Our last visit fizzed into life from the start with glasses of quince and prosecco, before we set about the typically hearty fare. Pig’s head and ham croquettes looked neater and more refined than anticipated, but were appropriately butch in flavour; cuttlefish, peas and wild garlic was nicely balanced; and an Old Spot pork chop was cooked just right, the meat’s unctuousness cut by lemon, caper and sage butter. Only the salt cod, celeriac and wild mushroom pithivier lacked excitement. Service at ground level is always friendly and usually well informed (although on this occasion staff seemed unable to describe that pithivier), but downstairs in the cellar cocktail bar we’ve been less than impressed.
