Eating at Kazakh Kyrgyz is quite an experience. The restaurant lies in the otherwise discreet Pasha boutique hotel and is accessed via a footbridge over an indoor pond. Mongolian, Turkic, Dungan (Chinese Muslim) and Slavic people, young and old, come to chat at long, low tables to eat this diverse blend of Central Asian cuisines and enjoy the belly-dancing classes, concerts, parties and special-occasion menus. Seating ranges from benches to colourful beanbags on the exotic carpet.

Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan were both on the Silk Road and consequently both their cuisines incorporate influences from Russia, Turkey and China. The variety on offer is actually rather exciting, and prices are low. It’s the Central Asian specialities – plov (rice dishes), flatbreads, kebabs, stir-fries, lagman (wheat noodles) and meat or vegetable dumplings – that you may want to concentrate on.

Prices are heart-warmingly low – nothing over £12, and the Central Asian specialities all around £7 or £8. Wines are as inexpensive as the cooking (well under £20 a bottle). Come on a Friday night and you’ll probably get entertainment from musicians and a belly dancer too.

If I could award this a minus-star score, I would.  This has to be the worst eating experience I have ever had - and I have eaten out at quite a lot of places.  If this was the last restaurant on earth, I would not go back again.  The food was awful, the service very poor and, whilst there were plenty of waiters walking around the place, it was as though they had never had a customer there before. Whatever you do, please do not eat here.

The thing about this restaurant is that I would probably recommend you try it. Even though the food was terrible and the service was worse, it was probably the most bizarre dining experience I've had in London, and that includes the supperclub I went to that was themed around the Rothschild family's 1970s surrealist balls. I am suspicious as to whether Pasha Hotel offers services other than just a bed for the night, and I am confused as to why it has plastic mannequins in unspecified national dress in a pool room that neighbours the restaurant. And I am totally into their indoor water feature. Dinner was a challenge - the starters were mostly very tasty, but I ordered beshbarmak – hand-made dumplings with beef and onion cooked in broth – and got a bowl of stock with some chewy lasagne sheets and grey beef mince floating in it. But hey, it's seriously cheap, and the experience can only be described as accidentally immersive.
