  • Moti Mahal

  • The London branch of Delhi’s long-standing Moti Mahal chain sighs with restrained elegance. Its interior is furnished in muted colours, with dimmed lighting and candles on tables producing an intimate atmosphere good for romancing and special-occasion treats; it seems to be working, the restaurant is popular with expense-account diners, well-heeled young couples and occasional tourists. Modern interpretations of traditional cooking styles pepper the menu. Kebabs are show-stoppers, notable for their imaginative marinades and smoky succulence. Tandoori salmon was cloaked in a light crust of lemony cream cheese, mixed with fresh dill and sweetened with a drizzle of honey. Main courses were distinctive and diverse; Goan sorpotel (a new-wave spin on an Indo-Portuguese stew) worked well with tender, gamey chunks of wild boar. Its masala was a beauty: silken sauce, sharpened with vinegary chilli paste, toasted garlic, and the subtle warming notes of cinnamon, pounded peppercorns and astringent ginger. In contrast, there were no modish twiddles with hyderabad biriani; this superb rendition was resplendent with fragrant rice grains steamed with cardamom and mace-marinated chicken morsels: the best we’ve had this year. Dining here isn’t cheap, but the set lunch is great value.

I am a bit surpised by the revues as I visited Moti Mahal recently. The food was delicous, much better than in other top indian restaurants in London. To go out for me is not about value for the money I spend as the best value I can get is by going to the supermarket and cook for myself. Eating our is all about experience and my experience in this restaurants exeeced my expectations; the service was spotless and the warm and friendly feeling that all the staff is trying to give you is absolutley incredible. I will definitely go back as this restaurant became top of my list.

Moti Mahal was pretty marginl I thought. We went there through lastminute during london restaurant week. On arriving, the huge main glass window was smashed, would could have only just been done but still looks unprofessional.
An aperitif was served all be it in a chipped shot glass and they were very slow to give us the drinks menu.
Overall food was pretty good but the cocktail I ordered was totally undrinkable.
Apon recieving our bill were we should have been asked if we would like to pay the optional service charge we were handed back the card machine with them already have pressed the 'yes; option to pay the service charge.
    Overall I wouldnt reccomend.

    Excellent food.
Booked the 50% offer through TimeOut - They knew nothing about a free cocktail with the offer.
Service a bit off, cocktails arrived after the starters, dessert wine arrived 15 mins before dessert so went warm and had to retrieve the half drunk wine from an over keen waiter clearing the table. Charged us initially for the dessert because we picked it from the menu they offered us when we should have had the one on the fixed meal menu.
    Still had an excellent meal.
