  • Royal Dragon

  • Royal Dragon has a less gaudy interior than a number of its Gerrard Street neighbours. While the neutral, sparse decor may lack attention to detail, the opposite is true of the cuisine, where even carrot slices are served cut into elaborate shapes. The deep-fried squid with pepper salt is particularly tasty; the combination of bouncy tender squid in a light, crisp batter topped with fried chopped garlic, shallot and fresh chilli is hot, salty and addictive. Feeling adventurous, we ordered kung po-style frogs’ legs, and stewed sliced abalone with sea cucumber and ducks’ feet. The kung po sauce was more sweet-sour than the expected spicy-hot, and the sea cucumber was too tough, but overall both dishes were enjoyable. The star dish was a plate of pei par duck – duck flattened into a ‘pei pa’ lute shape before seasoning and roasting. Served at room temperature, the meat was succulent and rich, with crisp lacquered skin and sweet, fruity hoi sin sauce. Another winner is crab steamed in chinese wine – a heady combination of fragrant Shaoxing wine and steaming, sweet crab in the shell.

i went to this restaurant on valentines day with my boyfriend, it was super busy, i think the ambience would be best early evening but was an exciting buzz. everyone was rushed off their feet but still made an effort to chat to us and help us with our order. the food was great, i love smoked chicken and chilli beef and was quite possibly the best i have tasted, the wine list was also quite good and great sake! all in all we had a lot of fun, we were trying to hide from the valentines day hideous glow . but were unfortunately seated next to a "serious" couple who insisted to snog for the duration of the meal, multi tasking to the extreme! that would be the only criticism for the restaurant but i guess thats going to far!
all in all we enjoyed it very much, and i am hoping to go back very soon!
fingers crossed the couple would have calmed down a bit, maybe just a bit of heavy petting throughout the starter... but one can only hope.

I requested a table for 13 for me and my mates on the Christmas meal deal.
The host was rather rude and agitated and disappeared after a short while and we did not get to see her even when we were leaving. Service was horrendous!!! The waiters appeared to be rather eager to serve us our meal.
With all the rush you would have thought that we would not have to wait for about 20minutes to get our starters and every other course in between giving us ample time to get a lot of drinks in.
The meal was okay but rather oily. The waiters were rather unfriendly. Drinks were over priced and so we ended up paying £37 aper head for the meal that was supposed to cost £25. If the service was more organised i reckon we would have spent about £30-£32.
In conclusion rather unimpressive apart from the quantity of the food . I would not recommend it to anyone that is used to quality service!!!
